Field spirits that hid in the corn and jumped out to misdirect travelers or kill drunken farm workers. Their bodies were the color of earth and their hair was grass-green. Females took the form of beautiful women dressed in white. They would take the children of farm workers and lose them in the corn. An offering of two eggs and an old cockerel place at the edge of the field kept them at bay. Illustrated Dictionary of Mythology by Philip Wilkinson creature_list
