Name: Debbie Palmer

Nov 3, 2007 - This picture was taken at Atlantia's Crown Tourney (an SCA event). It's one of my favorites of recent photos.

drawing

December 4, 2007
Acrylic paints on 16x20 inch stretched canvas.
This depicts a scene which took place at War of the Wings II in October, 2007. Baron Mark of Sacred Stone presented a large pair of white, feathered wings to the sweet Samantha, daught of Baron Angus and Baroness Nastasiia of Black Diamond, thus ending a war for possession of the wings, and allowing it to become a congenial contest of arms. I have fictionalized the scene by adding the coast and palace of Atlantia in the background. Atlantia exists in another reality, where the Middle Ages still live. So far as I was able, I painted the people in the clothing and accessories actually worn by them at the event. The pavilion is trimmed in the colors of Black Diamond.

Description:
I guess I should update this. I turned 39 this week. My sons are now 7 and 6, and we've switched from homeschool to public school. The boys are doing well in school, and have both been on the honor roll all this year so far.

I'm a member of the SCA, where I do heraldry, make garb, paint illuminations, and practice archery when I get the chance.

My art gallery has moved to DeviantArt, and you can find it at http://dkpalmer.deviantart.com

I'm really active in my church. We changed churches again a year and a half ago, when we moved again.

Okay, I just went looking for an introduction I wrote elsewhere a while ago. I'm going to include it here, too. This was in 2003, so bear that in mind {Updates are in this kind of brackets.}:

I'm Debbie, and I'm a stay at home mom. My sons are Tommy (almost 3) and Robby (almost 2). {They are 4.5 and 3.5 now.} My husband is Lewis, and I'm also keeper of my 19 year old brother-in-law, Daniel. {Daniel is almost 21, and has finally moved out on his own!}I'm a 34 {36} year old piscean. I'm 5'3" tall and hover around 300 pounds. I live in western North Carolina {western Virginia}, 2/3 of the way down the east coast of the United States, but my history is in Vermont.

I've wandered through a number of paid and volunteer jobs and experiences through the years, which sound like too many for the time involved if you don't realize that I often had both paid and volunteer activities at the same general time.

My interests include reenacting the Middle Ages and Renassaince periods of Europe, Northern Africa, and the Near East, with a special focus on Celtic territories. Included in that, I make more or less period costume, particularly for merchant class and above, as well as enjoying sewing in general. I study heraldic blazoning, and draw and paint heraldic art. I am studying manuscript illumination, as well as the bodhran. I also do target crossbow archery.

Other interests include reading (anything, down to a shampoo bottle if that's all I've got, but with a preference for high fantasy, sci fi, and historical fiction), writing, drawing and painting, most crafts, and making computer graphics. I also have interests in various sciences, especially astronomy, geology, archaeology, anthropology, and paleontology.

Politically, I've been a registered Republican since a few days after my 18th birthday, but disagree with the current administration on most fronts. {I registered Democrat before the last election.}

Religiously , I'm a Protestant Christian, and a member of the United Church of Christ {recently moved to the Presbyterian church}. I grew up in the same denomination, but have meandered through various Christian sects, including Evangelical and Catholicism; various earth-based Pagan systems, and a brief visit to Judaism on the way to where I am now. My husband is a practicing Pagan, and our children are being raised mostly as Christians. We combine the teachings of our different beliefs during the major holidays that we celebrate at similar times so that I doubt our children have a clue that there's a difference. My church knows about him, and his coven knows about me, and we're all good.

I know I've missed a lot. The rest will come up. If you don't know me yet, or do but find something you want to ask, please ask.

And, for the most part, that's me.

Quotes I like:

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind- killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see it's path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. " ~ Frank Herbert

"The most ridiculous concept ever perpetrated by H. Sapiens is that the Lord God of Creation, Shaper and Ruler of the Universe, wants the saccharine adoration of his creations, that he can be persuaded by their prayers, and becomes petulant if he does not receive this flattery. Yet this ridiculous notion, without one real shred of evidence to bolster it, has gone on to found one of the oldest, largest and least productive industries in history." ~ Robert A. Heinlein

"We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing, all-powerful God, who creates faulty humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes." ~ Gene Roddenberry

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public," ~ Theodore Roosevelt

''Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed. Those who are cold and are not clothed.'' ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
