The place was dark,
Nothing could be seen through the thick blanket of darkness,
Left to fend for herself,
A shy, young, child shivers in the dark,
The dark that terrifies her,
Nobody to comfort her in her moment of need,
Unsure if living was really worth the terrors,
Daily, those whom she thought cared would taunt her,
Terrorize her to no end,
Not a soul stepped out of the shadows to defend her,
She shivered once more before decisively stepping forward,
Instantly her ears were awash with voices,
Voices that spoke nothing more than lies,
Voices that constantly put her down,
"You can't do it you loser!" One would cry,
"You're too weak and ugly!" Another jeered,
The lies that spurred forth were endless,
For in truth, the girl was anything but ugly,
Long black hair cascaded down her back,
Ending in delicate curls just above her knees,
Caring blue eyes, constantly shining with tears,
Peered out of a delicately molded face,
One voice stood out among all the others,
The voice portrayed kindness,
"You can do it, follow your heart."
The other was thrust alongside her,
Forced to listen to the jeering voices,
All because she had shown her compassion,
Had shown that she was not just some heartless human,
Not a part of the masses,
Unwilling to be a follower,
The two of them stood strong against the others,
Until, one day, they disappeared,
Neither were seen again,
Although sometimes you could hear a whispery voice,
A voice calling out for others to disobey,
To do what needed to be done, to think for themselves,
And abandon those who could not be trusted,
Those that went along with the teasing just to belong to a crowd,
To be accepted in society they lost their identities,
I guess that's the price you pay,
When you want to be a part of the crowd,
Losing yourself amongst them, there is hardly ever a return,
No chance at regaining the things that you lost,
The girl's message was, "Be yourself,
Don't choose to do something because others do it,
Choose to do it because you want to preserve your identity,"
Shadows are seen,
Moving carefully through the angry masses,
To a better place filled with happiness.
