This place is my home.
My room; memories of
hungry, hungry hippos
and late-night slumber parties.
My reflection
in this musty mirror
once bright and clear.
My closet
with its little nook
perfect for hiding
or secretly reading mama's romance books,
teaching me about
love
despair
and gentlemen turned vagabonds.
My stairs,
where I sat and cried
and mommy and daddy fought
towering over last night's dinner,
old dishes echoing
filling the room
and leaving me all alone.

Every wall holds my secrets,
ever doorknob reflects my past.
Tell me, then,
why this place feels so completely
and utterly
foreign to me?

I am an alien in my own domain.

You have knocked me down
to lower depths
than good ole cap'n Nemo
ever dreamt of,
and it is here,
at this, the lowest, loneliest level
that I become the ocean's dregs
and am left without
a spine in this body
or pride in this soul.

Week Five: Genesis

The genesis of my anxiety
this exterior spine of grace,
is falling softly
upward, lifting my being -
denying the demands of gravity.
Call it what you will,
this act of faith;
to fly without wings.
No blemished cloud
or blind acrobat here
can court my heart.

I will traipse the stars.
