Christine - Yami

Strong Bond

He was leaning heavily on one hand, glasses slightly pushed up to one side, eyes glossy, mouth parted slightly. His quill was held lazily in one hand while the ink dripped unnoticed on the parchment it hovered over. Yami’s mind was wandering and no matter how hard he kept trying to reel it back and focus, it just simply outright refused.

With an annoyed sigh, the man finally shook his head and tossed the quill aside. He shoved back his chair back and stood. Both of his hands rose over his head and locked his fingers together then arched his back. A series of loud pops emitted from his body.

Well, it seemed very unlikely he was going to get this last-second report for the Council done. Oh well. Yami was never cared much for politics anyways.

The little demon made his way out of the library, stretching still as he went. He neck was starting to feel sore and stiff. That’s what you get, he supposed, when you hunched yourself over books and papers all day long. He supposed he probably deserved it.

Yami reached up to pull his glasses off his nose and folded them. He slipped them onto the front of his collar and exited through the garden door. It was a cold, brisk and waning winter day. He could almost smell spring, it was that close. Although all of the flowers were dead, and the trees were an ugly gray in the light blue sky still, he found all of the white and soft winter colors rather relaxing.

He sat himself down on the iron bench overlooking the frozen pond. In a few spots he had used a simple magic spell to keep some of the surface unfrozen. This allowed the little koi and goldfish swimming below to survive the often bitter winter temperatures. He leaned back, eyes rising to the bright blue above.

He only allowed himself to relax for a few moments before his mind began to grow suspicious. He was a man with a husband, thirteen children and currently twenty-four grandchildren. There was absolutely no reason for his estate to be so quiet.

He sat up, crimson eyes narrowed as he looked around. His suspicions did not hold long, for it wasn’t much longer before one of his own children came wandering quietly towards him. He smiled, motioning for her. Christine smiled delicately and within a few moments joined him.

He looked to her and his pleasant smile faltered slightly. She looked so frail… so sick. Almost like he was watching the life leave her day by day. Her white hair was brittle now, her skin almost ashen, her golden eyes dimmed and distant. She was beautiful still, of course. To any who did not know her they would not know any different. But she was his daughter. He knew what the passage of time had done to her. These last few years had not been kind to her.

“It’s good to see you, Christine,” Yami said quietly, reaching out to put his arm around her shoulder. She let out a little sigh and leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder. The two stared quietly into the white garden. Yami continued, “Are you here with Lynn?” He felt her nod. Yami blinked a few times, “Is… something wrong, Christine?”

Christine did not say anything. Her heart wasn’t racing, she didn’t feel anxious, or even really that sad—all considering. She knew what was going to come within the next month or so. She had a vision of it herself. Although the realization had at first indeed frightened and hurt her, she had realized quickly that she was okay with how everything was playing out.

Christine tilted her head back, smiling up at her father who offered a small smile back. Her hands were folded neatly in her lap, ankles crossed. She closed her eyes and just allowed herself to imagine everything around her. It was an interesting experience. She could feel her fathers arm around her, feel each breath that he took, she could clearly imagine that curious look he was giving her. She could imagine every way the garden went, where the snow as the thickest, where the little squirrels had clamored all over… she imagine the ice hanging on the fountain… It was an interesting feeling—almost like an out of body experience. Like she was above looking down.

Yami sat quietly for a long moment, allowing his daughter to stay silent. He was getting an eerie feeling. A feeling he couldn’t quite put his finger on. It was making his chest ache, and for some reasons tears were starting in his eyes.

He tried to shake the feeling. “Spring is coming soon. I think it’ll be very beautiful.”

Christine nodded against him again. Spring would indeed be lovely. The Spring Ephemerals would be some of the most stunning in a long time. They would cover the fields and grasses almost like a blanket of snow. Beautiful, powerful white flowers that would emerge from the previous deathly cold of winter. She had seen it, very clearly. In the middle of all the beautiful white flowers there would be a funeral. Christine smiled a little, nuzzling a little closer to her father who squeezed her just a little tighter.

She would not live long enough to see the Spring Ephemerals this year.

A/N:Story Bond 41/81 of a project I'm working on.

Although not a lot of words were exchanged (technically, none), Yami and Christine have a deep understanding of each other. It's the kind of bond when you can be around someone and not have to be talking to feel comfortable. Silence can be a conversation between them. I like their relationship. It's a very genuine, understanding and gentle bond.

Christine is a Seeress. She had predicted many things in her life, both good and bad. She has predicted death, and in this case, she has seen her own. She vowed long ago to stop divulging her visions to other when she grew old enough to realize that telling people good visions or bad, was never a good thing.
