I've been conversing with people on line for... what... 10 years now?
And to tell you the truth, back then we didn't have rules or anything to tell us how to write actiont ext.
And, since we were chatting first amongst our schoolmates, and after that, with getting to know English better, with everyone else - it didn't matter to me, that a friend used the "*" and another just used the "&" and some others used other markings...
Afterwords, when I started going to more chat rooms, societies, forums, whatever... I still didn't much care. I saw then, that most people used the "*", but still - I was used to another symbol.
And, frankly, I've met other people, who also use the "::".
So... I wouldn't say I use the "wrong" symbol.

2008-05-12 [Avoral]: Yeah, I've seen a million ways of denoting actions myself.
Doesn't seem like too many agree on it, in the grand scheme of things. The research just indicates, more than likely, an original consensus or perhaps (which would mean I've never seen the half of the Internet, which in turn I'd believe)the most widespread method.

2011-03-07 [Avoral]: Nah, mostly got bored with the site. Especially when everyone started going all "emo" and the social momentum started funneling people toward a few specific venues.
These days, it's all Facebook and Tumblr.

Besides, I'm feeling the urge to do something creative-ish, and you can't really just pull off from a site with an IM program installed and write something when you're on, not without seeming like a total dick.
