Communication Studies

Lesson One:The Basics

Successful Communication is defined as: The effective exchange of information by means of speech, writing, or behaviour.

Communication is an important part of our everyday life. Without being able to exchange information, we would live in chaos. Communication, however, does not allways mean successful communication. This class will teach you how to become a successful communicator.

In order for communication to take place there must be a transmitter of the message and a reciever of the message. In communication the transmitter sends out the message, and the reciever intercepts that message.(ex. I write this, and you read it). Just because you read this message though does not mean that it was transmitted successfully. In order to transmit a message successfully the reciever must, after intercepting the message, Interpret or understand the message, form a response to the message, and transmit the response to the sender of the orriginal message.

Example of Successful Communication:
Transmitter says, "hello"
Reciever hears the message. Reciever understands the message to be a greeting. Reciever says, "hello".
*conversation continues*

Of course, this is not the only way to communicate. Communication has no true limit. You communicate with yourself, others, animals, and possibly you may even communicate with inanimate objects such as a computer. Each type of communcation must be done correctly in order to be successful.
