Why his music Rocks

His lyrics are very deep, his singing hits my core with it's raw emotion. It's in a unique category: Industrial, not quite metal, not quite rock. It's hard to describe his music without using examples. Below I have "happiness in slavery" in the Broken CD. It's one of my favourites, I'll display it and say why.

Interpretation: He's speaking against the anti-conformists. He's saying don't rebel because he has rebelled against the conformist way of thinking, but in doing so, his mind has changed and he's so alone. He's stuck in this horrible nihilism and when one says the truth hurts, it really does. It's no fun to know the truth. It's no fun to discover that one doesn't really have an identity. The lyrics are quite explicit, and anyone who has experienced nihilism or existentialist angst will pick it up in a heartbeat. Actually, it's not hard to understand what he's saying...

I like to describe it as the anti rebel song.

Feeling Morbid?

The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails always gives me a horribly morbid satisfaction.

What happens in the song:

Strange noises as usualy, kinda underwatery..machinistic.

Melancholy Music (quiet piano). Tons of intro music. guitar. Climaxing slightly. Rising action. Drops, rising action.

*horrible bloodcurdling screams* (which continues for the duration of the song)

You hear the creepiest voice on top of the screaming (it's not a loud creepy voice, it's a very subtle creepy voice, barely audible):

"He couldn't believe how easy it was.
He put a gun into his face
Banggg.
So much blood for such a tiny little hole.

Problems do have solutions you know.
A lifetime of fucking things up: Fixed.
In one determined flash.

Everything is blue in this world.
The deepest shade of mushroom blue.

This song makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. "Problems do have solutions you know, a lifetime of fucking things up fixed in one determined flash" - a continueing sorce of amusement.

The Perfect Drug - Music Video Interpretation

It's all inside his head. He's hallucinating. The flashing colours and he drinks that absinthe. Nothing in that music video physically exists. The little boy is the inner child. The inner child is absolutely lost without his lover. He's going through a maze inside his head (metaphorically and literally). There's one fallen stone object and one standing one. There's a stone disembodied hand, possibly loss of ability to function. The two dark ladies, one of them serves him the hallucigenic drink. He uses sex and drugs to escape the pain. The two dark ladies are his mistresses.

Most NIN songs have their merits, the lyrics for this particular song is...very short and not substantial. The music definately makes up for it, but I also kinda like how it's very 'to the point.' Devoid..empty.
