Reading Challenge 2014

<img:stuff/SFdiv1.gif>

Welcome to the Reading Challenge 2014. The idea is to set yourself a certain number of books to read in 2014 and then... You read that many books! After you read them, you should totally write a review of it. YOU set the amount of books you want to read this year: it can be as low as 5, or as high as 200.

How to join up:

Follow the example below. write your name below, and then a link to the wiki-page where you will be keeping a list of the books you've read. Below that, keep a tally of how many books you've read, and also list when you joined the challenge. E.g.:

FAQ

Q: Can I re-read books I've already read?
A: You can re-read books you've already read prior to this year (providing you haven't already written a review on it) but you can't count the same book twice, even if you read it twice this year.

Q: How do I write a review?
A: Go to your ET diary. In the top right corner are a load of buttons. One of them says 'write a review'. Click it!

Q: It's February/March/November - can I still join?
A: Sure. But take when you're starting into consideration when deciding your goal.

Q: Can I count comics/graphic novels?
A: That's entirely up to you, and whether you personally count them as books or not. The point of this challenge is to get people to read more, so if you already read 300 comic books a year, then maybe you shouldn't count them. (NB: I know many people in other challenges count 3-5 comics/mangas as equivalent to one book).

Q: I started reading a book last year, but finished it this year, can I count that?
A: Yes. But you can't count books you start this year and don't finish.

2014-01-11 [hanhepi]: My goal is 1. By golly, I'm only 190 pages from the end of a book right now... I better actually meet my goal this year!

2014-01-11 [windowframe]: Of course e-books count. X_x it would be absurd and unjustifiable to let one person count a physical copy of Jane Eyre, and not let another person count an electronic copy of exactly the same book.

2014-01-11 [Ms. Steel]: Ewww, Jane Eyre!

2014-01-12 [windowframe]: Needed less Jane, more Bertha.

2014-01-12 [Ms. Steel]: To be honest, it's been eighteen or nineteen years since I've read it, and I can really only recall my supreme dislike for the book. :-I

2014-01-13 [Nioniel]: Just wondering if anyone counts audio books. I know it's not really reading, technically, but I'm still curious.

2014-01-13 [Yncke]: I haven't counted them in my list.

2014-01-13 [windowframe]: I tried to read it when I was around 15 and just found Jane so profoundly annoying and whiney, and overdramatic. I started it again a couple of years ago and found her... still whiney and annoying, but a lot more bearable. But the incident in the red room at the start and the mad woman in the attic are still the best parts as far as I'm concerned. <_<

2014-01-13 [windowframe]: I documented them separately on the page, but didn't count them towards my total. But I wouldn't object to people counting audio books.

2014-01-13 [Nioniel]: Since I've been commuting to and from work so much lately, I've been listening to a lot of audio books. I like the idea of documenting them but not counting them. Thanks!

2014-01-13 [Ms. Steel]: Maybe I should give Jane Eyre another go in that case. :-I

I have counted audio books in my total, but I do feel (just for personal reasons) a little like a cheat. HOWEVER... I can consume two books at once that way, and my time commuting to work is not wasted. The majority of the books on my list were actually read, though.

2014-01-13 [Nioniel]: The audio books I've been listening to have been ones I've already read multiple times; namely the Harry Potter series. It's a fun way to pass the otherwise boring travel time. Plus, like you said, it's a good way to be working on two books at once!

2014-01-29 [Yncke]: For those enjoying audiobooks: there's a humble audiobook bundle going, at the moment: https://www.humblebundle.com/ .

2014-03-11 [CuteCommander]: Well done Nio for doing the best so far :)

2014-07-02 [CuteCommander]: Looking at the lists of others, I really read some trash in comparison!

2014-08-07 [windowframe]: Pratchett, King and Tolkien are not trash! :O

2014-08-24 [Triola]: Halfway!

2014-09-25 [Triola]: I am never ever making it to 30 before New Years :P

2014-09-25 [Linderel]: Read short books? :P

2014-09-30 [Triola]: Maybe :P

2015-01-01 [CuteCommander]: I failed! At least gives me a better idea of what to aim for this year
