Soutzoukakia Smyrneika: large meatballs with cumin, cinnamon and garlic and served in a tomato sauce.
Ingredients for ~10 soutzoukakia (Smyrna meatballs):
For the meatballs:
1/2 of minced meat of your liking (I use pork/beef mix)
1 onion (minced)
1 clove of garlic (minced)
1/2 cup of breadcrumb
half a teaspoon of cumin
half a teaspoon of cinnamon
salt
Pepper (preferably freshly ground)
For the Sauce:
1 cup of tomato pulp or 2-3 fresh tomatoes (ground)
1/2 onion (minced)
1 clove of garlic (minced)
1/2 glass of red wine
Some cumin
salt
Pepper (preferably freshly ground)
1 teaspoon of sugar
Parsley
Add all the ingredients for the meatballs in a bowl and mold until they thoroughly blend. If you want them to blend really nicely, use your hands. You'll get dirty but the result is worth it :P
Shape the mixture into meatballs.
Fry them (with olive oil) until they're nicely brown on every side and place them on a plate where you should have put some paper to gather the most of the oil
In a pan or pot lightly chaute the onion and garlic and pour the wine over them.
Add the rest of the ingredients in and let it simmer until it thickens.
Add the meatballs in the sauce and leave it simmering for ~20 minutes till they soften a bit. If your sauce is too thick, add some hot water in.
You can either serve with rice or mashed potatoes or your favourite pasta
