General technology

Descriptions and uses of the general technology used by the species in the known parts of the galaxy.

NOTE: Most of this isn't required-to-know information, but it's interesting. Well, at least I think it's interesting.

Spacetravel

In addition to rocket-powered and solar wind based interplanetary travel, regenians came up with a way to achieve traveling speeds greater than that of light. This is done by encasing a spaceship in negative mass – one of the basic principle of physics is that a positive mass particle will have a speed lower than that of light, a non-mass particle (photon, that is, light) will have the speed of light and a negative mass particle will therefore have a speed greater than that of light. The encasing will be "heavier" in the front of the ship, or in the direction where the ship should move to.
However, due to the unstability of negative mass in this world of positive mass particles, great amounts of negative mass cannot be achieved, therefore greatly limiting the size of spaceships that are able to travel faster than light. The unstability furthermore limits travel speed, as very fast traveling tends to break down the encasing due to high-energy impacts with the positive mass particles found scarcely in space. For this reason the route has to be chosen around any large masses like asteroids and planets. However, one case was reported in which a spaceship survived passing through the outer layers of a star, but the star was disturbed.

The practical limitations are the area of the encasing (to avoid contact with positive mass), mass (the greater the mass to be encased, the greater negative mass needed to encase it) and time (the traveling can't be done that fast due to unstability and uncertainty).

Spaceships that travel slower than the speed of light can also be used for interstellar travel, but it will take decades and centuries. These ships are usually very large and can maintain their own environment and population, or are stasis ships.

Basic ship types
Fast interstellar travel: light cargo ships, light transport ships
Slow interstellar travel: stasis ships, ship stations
Interplanetary travel: light general ships, cargo ships, transport ships, explorer ships, space stations, artificial environments

Genetic manipulation

Most species have come up with simple methods of genetic manipulation, such as using viruses to alter the genetic makeup. However, regenians and silencers achieved much greater control over it once they figured out how to separate the genes that achieve certain characteristics and how to affect those genes exactly.
Nowadays genetic manipulation is done by using viruses or radiation – both have their risks, but the risks can often be minimized.

Due to the huge amount of cells in a grown body, genetic manipulation is rarely done to things other than zygotes and gametes. However, especially when done to zygotes, genetic manipulation has to be done very carefully to not mess up, as the few cells will form the basis of a whole organism. It is therefore very expensive, and is usually used only when absolutely necessary.

Of course, the area in which genetic manipulation is most used is research. The research has given way for many weird things, the greatest being the creation of hybrids between regenians and terrans.

Firearm part descriptions

Barrel: the part through which the projectile is fired. Increasing barrel length increases ATK.
   Possible barrels lengths:
   – tiny guns: 5–20 cm
   – handguns: 10–40 cm
   – long guns: 30–90 cm
   – machine guns: 20–90 cm

Action: the parts that are responsible for propelling the projectile, ejecting the casing and replacing the cartridge.
   Different types of actions:
   – pump action (PA): the gun needs to be "pumped" to eject the cartridge and insert a new one
   – semi-automatic action (SA): the gun fires one catridge per trigger pull
   – automatic action (AA): the gun will keep firing as long as the trigger is being pulled (or fires a round of for example 10 cartridges)

Igniter: the part that ignites the gunpowder (propellant) in the cartridge.

Magazine (clip): the pack that contains catridges. Recyclable.
   Sizes:
   – tiny (for tiny guns)
   – small (for handguns)
   – medium (for long guns)
   – large (for machine guns)

Chamber: the place into which a magazine is put. Sizes vary according to the gun type and magazine.

Cartridge: comprises casing, propellant, primer and the projectile itself (bullet). Casing recyclable. There are several different kinds of propellants and bullets.

Safety: a mechanism that prevents accidental firing.

Silencer: a mechanism that prevents worsening of the user's hearing.

Improving guns:
better rifling
better controlling of the propelling
multiple barrels?
special silencers
