The plainslands of Tenalius is but a province of the Kingdom of Terrafirm, the god granted kingdom of the continant. The continant itself is an island, large and oblong, spanning hundreds of miles east to west, and over a thousand north to south. Though the King and his council have ultimate authority, the five provinces of Terrafirm are largely independant and autonomous, ruled almost absolutely by a House with a noble Lord, and each noble family within in support of the chosen house.
For two hundred years, the eastern province of Tenalius, large and rich with the bounty of sea and harvest, has continued to prosper. The Lord's house, McCromick, has enjoyed consistant political influence in the kingdom and peace in it's militarily strong territory. Tenalius dominates the central east coast and much of the eastern central plains. To the west is the Kingdom province of Terran, host to the royal army and the capital. Tenalius' own army is nearly equal in strength to the King's personal royal army, as is the Southern province of Bryant, in it's arid, dry Savannah and the rainy hills of the Western province, Gilead, which is the seat of the religious order of the god of light, patron deity of the kingdom. To the north, high crags and steep peaks dominate the cold climate of Icefolly, the weakest and least important, but no less established northern province.

But, great political turmoil has swept the land. From the north, sweeping through the commonfolk of Icefolly, has come a sudden plague, seemingly no different than a common chill, but produces fatal lung disease in as many as 20% of the infected. Through major quarantines, the disease has damaged severely, but has otherwise been largely contained in the north. Inexplicably, this same disease has infected the King, despite it being almost fully stopped from southward spread. His condition worsens as he lays abed. This king, Robert IV, 40th king in succession from his predecessor, Gomez the Conqueror, who first brought the five provinces under singular rule almost a millenia before, has only reigned for eight years, and lays dying at the age of 27. His only offspring are girls, Princess Auruliae, age 5, and Princess Tully, age 10. No king of Terrafirm has died without a male heir in over 250 years.

What this all means, is that in order to preserve the royal line, a House Noble of Lord's lineage must marry the eldest princess. The last time this happened, a war waged for nearly a decade between Bryant and Gilead, until Gilead proved victorious and Destin I of Gilead ruled as Imperial Vicar until his first born son reached age 16. Should the king die, an immediate marriage to Princess Tully by a House Noble is necessary.
Both Bryant and Gilead, the greatest Provinces, have in the months of the king's illness bolstered and prepared their military. Though typically bitter rivals, Tenalius and Bryant fostered a shaky truce by the proposed betrothal of Lady Jade of Tenalius with Nicholi of Briarthorne, the heir of House Bradshaw, the Lord's House of Bryant. Tensions have mounted between the two since Lady Jadean has openly opposed this marriage, and the banner houses of Lord McCromick do not all support siding with Bryant Province.

The Kingdom is on the verge of Civil war, and, despite their peerless navy, Tenalius has brokered with mercenaries from the Free Cities of Braavos, islands on the East sea which partly own some of Tenalius' northern coast, which are trade centers. Among these prized mercenaries is a renowned swordmaster who goes by the name "Joshua of Wreckgate..."
