Those Three Little Words

There are times when the dating, the singles scene, or even a chance encounter leads to love. At least the neurotic thinks it's love. This leads to many joys and problems, of course, but one of the earliest problems is the inability of some neurotics to say, "I love you." It means so much to them to say these words, such a commitment, and, besides, they've been burned so many times before. Frankly, they are tired of saying "I love you." Why should they always have to take the initiative? Why should they once again lay their whole lives on the line just so they can run the risk of hearing the person in question come back with "You do?" or "Don't be ridiculous" or "I've got a train to catch"?

The fact that these neurotics eventually learn not to be the first to say "I love you" does not prevent them from falling in love (even repeatedly), however. Nor does it prevent them from expressing this love in a thousand other ways. If you hear a partner whom you know to be neurotic utter any of the following, for instance, you'd better start preparing for what lies ahead (or consult the train schedule). If you find yourself saying any of this, you are yet again in over your head.

1. "You can use my car any time you need it."
2. "I really like your family."
3. "Your lips curl up (down) in the nicest way."
4. "Don't you think it would look better if the chair went over there?"
5. "I used your toothbrush."
6. "Sex really doesn't mean that much to me."
7. "I haven't felt this relaxed in months."
8. "You can always come to my parents' house for Thanksgiving."
9. "I think the scars give you character."
10. "I hate you."
