Vincent - Perry

Good Bond

“What are you doing?”

Vincent about jumped out of skin. The young man flailed dramatically and jerked about. Sitting quietly, smugly, on the brick wall meeting the front gates of the estate was Perry. The younger man had a look that showed he was generally pleased he had managed to startle his older brother.

Vincent placed one hand on his hip while the other reached up to push his glasses back onto his nose. “What am I doing? I’m going for a walk. Do you want to come with me?”

Perry’s eyes narrowed, perhaps suspiciously. He was sitting with his legs crossed, one daintily over the other. He was leaning forward, his chin propping up his very disinterested face. A flicker of interest touched the jade eyes and a slight twitch of a smile tried to show through Perry’s usual stoic expression. He began to consider the offer.

Vincent waited patiently, smiling gently.

“Fine.” Perry said after a moment, sighing loudly—as if Vincent was forcing him to go. The young man slid from the wall, landed gracefully, and then brushed his hands together. “Where are we going?”

“Oh, no where in particular. I just like to wander.” Vincent laughed quietly and his hands retreated into his pockets. The two began to walk quietly side by side. Crimson eyes searched the canopy of trees above, picking out birds and butterflies, identifying berries and wildflowers silently—and yet they would always quickly retreat to the ground as if searching desperately for something. Perry found this annoying.

“What are you doing?” Perry asked, nodding stiffly when Vincent did one of his ritual scans of the light dirt trail.

“Huh?” the demon looked up, blinking. “What do you mean?”

“That.” Perry pointed at the ground, eyes narrowing. “What were you doing? You keep looking at the ground.”

“Oh, yes. I’m making sure I don’t step on any little critters.” Vincent seemed to make an extra effort with one step, and Perry’s jade eyes flickered back to notice a little beetle scuttling across the ground.

Perry frowned, “Why would you do that? They’re just bugs.”

“They’re insects, Perry.” Vincent corrected, “You should have a little more respect for those little guys. Without them we’d have quite some troubles on our hands.”

“Yeah. Without them. Not one of them.” Perry’s foot came crashing down on a trail of ants. The trail broke and the ants scattered. Vincent frowned back at the disarray, but Perry seemed to have not noticed.

“Just because we don’t see eye-to-eye doesn’t mean they deserve any less respect for the lives that they have,” Vincent said quietly.

Perry’s eyes unwillingly turned to the other’s face. It was melancholic—which was so stupid. They were just bugs… No reason to try and make it seem like they were anything more than that, right?

Perry looked away, pursing his lips in annoyance. His brow’s knitted together with thought and his eyes narrowed. Why was Vincent making this such a big deal? ’Doesn’t mean they deserve any less respect’? The hell did that mean?

A butterfly fluttered into Perry’s face and annoyed he swatted it away. It jerked desperately in the air before guiding itself down onto a flower. Its wings folded together and it perched precariously, trembling. Vincent stopped, staring blankly at the injured creature, but Perry continued to walk, completely oblivious.

“Poor thing.”

Perry stopped, turning around. Vincent was kneeling in front of a cluster of wildflower, looking far too sad.

“What are you doing?” Perry snapped, annoyed. “I thought you were taking a walk.”

Vincent frowned quietly. His crimson eyes were searching something. After a moment Perry noticed a butterfly twitching, distressed. Was that what Vincent was looking at so pathetically? It was just a stupid butterfly…

“It’s nature, Vincent. The weak die off and the strong live on.” Perry was speaking almost as if he had no idea that he was the one that had injured the delicate and innocent blue butterfly. Vincent reasoned that he probably didn’t. “Vincent? Are you really going to stare at it? What are you going to do, bury it when it dies? Something will come along and eat it and the food chain will continue on like always.”

Vincent stood slowly and let out a soft breath that he didn’t realize he had been holding. To him, he couldn’t help but notice how so many treated demons like they treated these insects. Like they were insignificant—disposable. It made his heart hurt thinking about it. It was entirely too sad to be able to find the resemblance.

“Hello, Vincent? Are you going to just stand there?”

The crimson-eyed demon felt his eye twitch involuntarily and he reached up to rub at the spasm. Perry was young, a little naïve, but most of all—obnoxiously ignorant. As his big brother, Vincent had an obligation to teach him about little things. About others feelings… about empathy. And Vincent was, for sure, full of empathy.

The tears of frustrating that stood in his eyes were proof of that.

A/N:Bond 15/81 of a project I'm working on.

I gave Vincent a characteristic that I tend to do. I do watch where I'm walking to try and minimize the damage I do to the little insects trying to make their way across man-made roads and trails and whatnot... I mean, when it rains and there's little worms scooting across the pavement I about die because it's so hard to walk where the little guys aren't trying to get across D: So, yes. Vincent is very attune with nature, very respectful, empathetic. He finds connections and meanings that most people wouldn't. Like, say, the relationship between insects and people, and then the elves and the demons. Being a demon he has faced some issues, but he's mostly been exempt from it since he's so damn charismatic, unlike Yami who still receives the full force of hatred.

And then there's Perry. Oh, Perry, Perry. I like writing with him because he's so different from the rest of the kids. He's disinterested with others feelings, he's rude, he's arrogant... I like to write with him. Lol. At times I dislike him, but because he's one of my babies I can't help but like him. He's jerk-fulness will become more apparent as I learn to write with him. He has some anger issues and whatnot from being abandoned by his real parents when he was little. He's not over that and uses it as an excuse to be... well, to be a jerk.
