Good Bond

“Come on, Vincent. Just try.”

“Oh, no. I couldn’t… I can’t… I…” Vincent fumbled as Scout began to usher him into the training area. The blue-haired nymph was beyond himself with joy. It had just occurred to him that his older brother was a demon—and the fact in itself was enough evidence that Vincent could summon the elements around him without any outward force to help. He had innate magic, like their father. Vincent was remarkable!

“Come on, it’s easy, right? Just think really hard and boom,” Scout’s fingers jerked outwardly in an effort to show the destruction that Vincent could produce with barely a thought. Vincent, however, flinched at the enthusiasm in his brother’s voice.

“I can’t…”

“You can too, don’t give me that. You’ve got all the necessary…” Scout waved his hands around and his face scrunched up, “genetics and whatnot.”

“Yes…” Vincent agreed quietly, nodding. He let out a soft sigh and his head dropped. “Scout… I just can’t.”

Scout frowned further, hands on his hips as he leaned down to look up into his brother’s face. “Why not? Are you broken?”

Vincent let out a soft laugh and shook his head, “No, nothing like that…” he reached up to push his glasses back onto his nose and turned away, “I just never exercised my chi growing up. Father tried to teach me, and he did. I know how to contain it, but I don’t ever want to use it.”

Scout frowned, one blue eyebrow quirking, “Why not?” he asked flatly.

“…It’s…complicated.” Vincent turned back to his brother, giving him a half smile that was weak and riddled with sadness. “I’m glad you’re interested in becoming a Mage, Scout, but I can’t help you.”

Scout frowned, disappointed. His eyes narrowed, light blue orbs searched the crimson gaze that held his evenly. With an exaggerated sigh Scout threw himself forward and draped himself all over his shorter sibling, “Why not?” the nymph whined, “I just want to see what you can do. Just a little poof of fire or a droplet of rain. I’m not asking for a typhoon.”

“S-Scout…” Vincent struggled under the weight of his younger brother. Scout was a good six inches taller than Vincent himself and weighed quite a bit more. Vincent wasn’t known for his strength either—he was an intellectual person. Being such a person he often neglected his physical self and had become somewhat of a push-over. Scout, on the other hand, was tall, refined and well-trained. Vincent envied him for having the ability to use his brain and his brawn. Though, more often than not, Scout often forgot to use his brain. “Scout… I can’t… hold you up… like this…” Vincent’s legs were shaking and he was feeling the strain in his back. It was rather pathetic that he was already exhausted after only a few moments of holding up his brother.

Scout sighed, and finally feeling sorry for his brother straightened, lessening most of the weight but continued to lean on his elder brother. The nymph searched the training circle quietly. It was well-used, weathered from hours of training between himself and his eldest brother, Raif. Raif may not be a full-demon, but he had a knack for harnessing the elements. Scout was most positive it had something to do with being blood-related to their father, Yami.

Scout had never questioned if Edward could use magic—he was too thick-headed lacked the patience to even utter a sentence laced with magical incentives. Aeres was too prideful of her physical prowess to master something that involved little physical exertion, and Sierra… Sierra was like their Papa, Kaelin. She would rather heal then destroy.

That left Vincent—the full-blooded demon. The crimson-eyed wonder. The intellectual. The one that could memorize those long enchantments. The one that could wreck havoc even without them. He had potential and Scout was bitter to see that his brother refused to explore it.

“Scout…?” Vincent’s tone was quiet, tentative. He was staring quietly at his brother’s face. Scout looked lost, somewhat miffed and a little sad. It was starting to worry Vincent. “Is… something wrong?” Unconsciously again he reached up to fix his glasses.

Scout watched him do so and his eyes studied the others gentle hands. They were delicate, but worn with years of endless writing. Calloused where he held his quill, but immaculately clean even though his hands always seemed to be under the soil, digging, cherishing the black dirt and coaxing life into the plants around them. They were the hands of a creator, not a destroyer.

Scout chewed at his bottom lip for a moment longer before he sighed and ruffled his brother’s perfectly straight hair between both his hands. Vincent protested with a noise of complaint and tried to seize the others hands but Scout quickly retreated out of reach.

“Fine. I won’t pester you anymore to show me your glorious powers. You just be a jerk and keep it all to yourself.”

Vincent snorted, rolling his eyes and shook his head at the other as he fixed his hair possessively with his fingers. Vincent’s inability to stay mad about anything was probably another reason why it would be impossible for him to raise his hand with the intent to destroy. Crimson eyes didn’t give him the desire to destroy because he could. Only a damaged heart could do that.

Vincent did not have a damaged heart, like their father once had.

A/N:Story Bond 22/81 of a project I'm working on.

This didn't come out exactly how I figured it would. I wanted it to be a little more deep, but it rather lacked that. I started to get in character with Scout, but I had wanted to focus on Vincent. So it ended up switching focus to Scout near the end. That wasn't what I intended, but that's what happened. So the meaning I had started out with became rather lost.

Scout is an inspiring Mage/Sage. He doesn't have any innate magical abilities... he's water nymph/human and has to read from parchments like most everyone else. He's a student under his eldest brother, Raif, who is elf/demon, the elven part being dominate. Raif can't use innate magic either so taking on Scout wasn't like having to learn a new way to teach. Even though Raif learned from Yami who does have innate magic due to being a full-blood demon.

Vincent with crimson eyes and black hair, like his father, can use innate magic. However, his is rather diluted. He never took the time to exercise his ability since he had never had any desire to be violent. When Yami was growing up he found his powers interesting and ended up teaching himself how to harness his chi which ended up causing some very powerful and destructive spells. Yami lacked any respect for life growing up, especially after his exile and before meeting Kaelin. He learned magic to destroy, not to protect himself and he regrets that. Which is mostly why he never pestered Vincent into learning how to use his magic since he knew Vincent didn't have the will to take another's life, even in self-defense.

So...now that that rant is over. XD;
