About the artist and why this picture was chosen for the daily picture:

As a condition for graduation, student's at [Nightfall]'s high school have to do a final project of community service. Leave it to a creative soul to ensure that the project was something worthwhile as well as enjoyable! By creating a painting of the school's mascot--the Tides, made "cooler" with a dragon implimented in the wave--, a very impressive work is the result. Painted on plywood and backed with silverleaf (an apparantly very sticky material made of silver pounded very fine and thin, which [Nightfall] simply calls "evil"), the painting is to be hung up in the school for several years, perhaps even longer. It wouldn't be a surprise at all if they decided to hold onto this treasure of a piece. It's truly impressive on so many levels, but particularly on how well a rather boring mascot was transformed into something far more fantastical.
