Now the interesting bit begins. Thought you could just weasel out with smooth layers of various colors? Wrong! >:) At this point, I switched to a smaller airbrush size, and started drawing various lines, using the existing (sort-of-)texture as a guideline. These lines are what makes the bark barky. Use lighter colors for the highlights and darker colors for the shadows, remember to vary the colors a plenty, and don't go super light and super dark at once, take it gradually. It doesn't take as much time to make several strokes in one place by gradually increasing lightness, as it takes to correct a bunch of sharp highlights that would make the tree look way too glossy.
