2014-08-05 [Nioniel]: I pronounce it "tur-moyl", so I only get the two syllables for that one.

2014-08-05 [Mortified Penguin]: Not that that link clears anything up or anything... apparently it says there are only six syllables.

But it is a pretty useful tool for haiku-ing!

2014-08-05 [hannes]: To me 'turmoil' is also only two syllables. :)

2014-08-05 [wicked fae mage]: Disregard my comment then, it is a difference in pronunciation, and thank you members for clarification. :)

2014-08-06 [Sunrose]: http://www.howmanysyllables.com/
Who is going to judge this contest? :P

2014-08-06 [hanhepi]: I was afraid when I started watching this contest that it'd be full of dry boring stuff, but I actually love all of these. >.<

2014-08-06 [Stephen]: The Literature Judges will judge it, of course!
Some of them, anyway. Plus the new one's we're working on deciding on. xP

2014-08-06 [Sunrose]: Ahas :P

2014-08-06 [Sunrose]: On another note. [wicked fae mage] can you upload a voiceclip on how you pronounce turmoil? voice clips

2014-08-08 [wicked fae mage]: As of now I cannot. I don't have anything that can record me speaking. And I'm American with a particular way of pronouncing the L sound on the end of words with more than one syllable. I cannot for the life of me remember the linguistic term for the two ways to pronounce the L sound though.

ter-moy-ul like the L sound in you'll. Because of my accent, it gets pronounced as if there is a u in front of the l.

2014-08-08 [Sunrose]: Yea that's why it would be cool to hear. Maybe some other time..

2014-08-09 [wicked fae mage]: Perhaps. Don't even have a mic to do that.

And I remembered it's a dark L and a light L. Dark L is pronouncing it as if there is a U in front of it, like in fool or pool. A light L is the Lah sound, usually with a vowel following it like in lax or a "short" vowel sound before it like in pal. (the dark L is a dead give-away of an American in 8/10 cases)

I honestly cannot even fathom how everybody else pronounces it to make it only 2 syllables :/

2014-08-09 [Nioniel]: Wait, so then you say "Poo-ul" and "foo-ul"?

I found this with sound clips: http://www.forvo.com/word/turmoil/

Now I'm only hearing "turmoil" with three syllables, though. :/ I've still never pronounced it that way.

Actually, this one only sounds like two syllables: http://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/american/turmoil

2014-08-09 [Stephen]: I say it with three syllables. x)

2014-08-10 [wicked fae mage]: No, it's just commonly pronounced in the Appalachian region in some multiple syllable words as if there is a u in front of it. Turmoil is one of those words. Other words like boil and roil (pronounced exactly the same as royal if that helps) are pronounced similarly. The dark L is ül at the end of a lot of words for me and others in my regional dialect.

2014-08-11 [Stephen]: Yeeeah, 14 15 entries and counting! >:D

Go, go, go!

2014-08-11 [Nioniel]: x)

2014-08-11 [wicked fae mage]: And so many entries literally speak to each other!

2014-08-31 [Nioniel]:
Thank you all for the
Wonderful entries, but now
This contest is closed.
:)

2014-09-01 [Sunrose]: Wow just in time x)
