The Kemetic Pagans Page

This is a gathering spot for Kemetic pagans of all sorts - Wiccans, pagans, reconstructionists, everything. Anyone who feels a connection to any of the Netjeru of ancient Egypt is completely welcome. If you'd like to join, please message me. It's a work in progress, so if there isn't anything up yet, sorry!

The Gods

There are far too many different deities to list all by themselves, so I'll go over a few of them that I know better, and if you're looking for anyone else, try TourEgypt.

Their section on the gods is ( http://www.touregypt.net/magazine/godsofancientegypt.htm ). They have a general religion section is here( http://www.touregypt.net/magazine/generalancientegyptianreligion.htm). Also a good site to check out is Kemet.org, which is the official site of Kemetic Orthodoxy. Even if you aren't KO, they have great sources and information. The House of Netjer boards( http://www.netjer.org/forums ) are worth checking out as well.

A note about the Graeco-Roman names: I myself do not use them, and attempt to always use the Kemetic versions(or as close as we can get). I hold the belief that for many of the Names, the GR versions are different entities entirely.

Aset(GR: Isis) - Aset was the mother of Heru, and the faithful wife to Wesir. Her sister was Nebt-Het, and she was part of the Ennead at Heliopolis( http://www.philae.nu/akhet/ennead1.html ). She is fiercely protective and will use any means nessecary to get what she wants. She is *not* the same as Isis, IMO. More on this later.

Heru(GR: Horus) - There are different Herus - Heru'ur(Heru the Elder), Heru in the Horizon and Heru-sa-Aset(Heru, son of Aset). Heru-sa-Aset was the son of Aset(obviously) who grew up to avenge his father Wesir by triumphing over Set.

Bast(GR: same) - Bast is the daughter of Ra. She is probably one of the most famous Netjer - almost everyone knows of the cat-headed goddess. She is *not* the "lighter" side to Sekhmet - the only way Sekhmet and Bast are connected is that Bast was more common in Lower Egypt, and Sekhmet was more common in Upper Egypt. They represent different parts of Egypt. She is not a lesbian sex all loving goddess, either - she is one of the goddesses who have the epithet "Eye of Ra" and one passage depicts her as ripping out hearts of transgressors of ma'at and placing them at the feet of her father. Bastet is an incorrect spelling of her name, the Egyptians later added the extra 't' because the Nubians had a tendancy of leaving it off if it wasn't emphasized.

One of the best websites on Bast out there:

Sekhmet(GR: same) - Sekhmet is the lionness-headed goddess. She is both a healer and a destroyer, and has a strong link to Het-Hert(GR: Hathor) as a certain myth portrays. Ra was growing tired of the blasphemy and rudeness of men in his old age, and asked Het-Hert to destroy them. She turned into Sekhmet and went on a rampage, destroying everything in her path. Ra had changed his mind, and put red beer in her path to drink. She became drunk and pacified, and transformed into the more peaceful Het-Hert. (note: this was paraphrased from memory, so if I'm a bit off, excuse me)

Ptah(GR: same) - Ptah is the husband of Sekhmet. Together with their son Nefertem, they made up the Memphite triad. Ptah is usually shown as a mummiform man with a skullcap on, often painted green. He is a creator god - he who spoke the names of everything in existence, and thus made them so. He was later syncretised with Sokar and Wesir.

Nefertem(GR: same) - Nefertem is the son of Ptah and Sekhmet. He is the lotus god, almost always portrayed with a lotus on top of his head. He has attributes of healer, protecter/defend of Egypt, and tie-ins with Ra and Atum.

http://www.freewebs.com/per_nefertem (my site! tell me if you have any improvement suggestions - it's very hard to find information on Nefertem, and as far as I know, my site is the only one dedicated entirely to him)

Set/Sutekh(GR: Seth) - Set was the god of chaos. He is not evil. In fact, he stands at the head of Ra's solar barque to fight off Apep. Also, as someone at the House of Netjer boards put it: "Set killed Wesir (which in essence is necessary, for if the grain isn't cut(=dies) and is buried(=sown), there will be no next life(=new crop)..."

2005-07-13 [sapphiresphinx]: Thank you! It helps to be a nerd, that makes it easier to be well-informed :P And you're welcome for the links.

2005-07-18 [Morbid Poet]: so how is everyone in here

2005-07-20 [Casval]: Wow, i've only ever found one other person who ever referred to ancient Egypt as Kemet. Nice to see educated people exhist.

2005-07-21 [sapphiresphinx]: Hey, goes back to you too. I know more, but that's at either pagan communities or Kemetic communities, so it makes sense.

2005-09-11 [nokaredes]: Hey...I am watching this wiki. >_>

2006-05-13 [Avoral]: I'm particularly fond of the references you gave after/before each passage. Rock on.

2006-05-15 [sapphiresphinx]: haha. I gotta rep-re-sent *does ghetto chest-smack thingie* the good sites since there's so many crappy ones.

2006-05-15 [Avoral]: I really envisioned that stupid snapping motion in the shape of Z tying to each syllable of "rep-re-sent." But thank you very much for not doing it.

2006-05-30 [Morbid Poet]: that is great

2008-02-06 [Avoral]: It's a kemetic wiki.
Kemet implies a backing of Egyptian whatnot.
