OBEA, OBEAH: The polytheistic religion and magickal system of West African origin found in the Caribbean, South America and North America today. OBSESSION: Being besieged or attacked by a person or spirit from without. Often used synonymously with possession, though possession refers to being completely taken over by spirits. OENOMANCY: Divination by interpreting wine. Also known as Oinomancy.
OFFERINGS: A gift, especially to a deity or being, in petition, thanksgiving or appeasement. Pagan offerings consist of cakes, drinks, fruits, flowers, poems, handicrafts, incense, nuts and other items. See also: Sacrifice.

OINTMENTS: Greased based preparations that are used in magickal, healing, and oracular rites. Not in common use today for magickal rites as most surviving recipes are believed to have been distorted to disgrace witchcraft during the Middle Ages. Also known as Unguents.
OLD ONES, The: A Wiccan term often used to encompass all aspects of the Goddess and God. Some Wiccans view them as an alternative of the Mighty Ones: beings, deities or presences often invoked during Wiccan ceremony to witness or guard the rituals. The Mighty Ones are thought to be either spiritually evolved beings, once human, or spiritual entities created by or charged by the Goddess and the God to protect the Earth and to watch over the four directions. They are sometimes linked with the Elements. Also known as the Witch Gods.
OLD RELIGION, The: Italian Witchcraft, founded in the mid-14th century with the teachings of Aradia, the Holy Strega, and based upon the pre-Estruscian Italian belief system. The Old Religion is a worship of the "Source of All Things", through the personification of the Goddess and God. Also known as Strega, Stregheria, and La Vecchia Religione.
OM: The meditative word representing the Hindu Trinity, Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva. Original form is Aum.
OMEN: A sign, preferably found in nature, that foretells either good or bad events.
OMPHALOMANCY, OMPHILOMANCY: Divination by interpreting the navel (bellybutton). Originally omphalomancy involved counting the number of knots in the umbilical cord to predict how many more children a mother would have.
ONEIROMANCY, ONIROMANCY: Divination by interpreting dreams.
ONOMANCY, ONOMOMANCY, ONOMATOMANCY: Divination by interpreting names.
ONYCHOMANCY: Divination by interpreting the fingernails. The original form was to study the reflection of the sun in the nails of a young boy.
OOMANTIA: Divination by interpreting the shape, color, and patterns (when dyed) of an egg.
OOSCOPY: Divination by nurturing an egg and observing the hatching of a chick. Often used to determine the sex of an expected child.
OPHIOMANCY: Divination by observing the appearance and behavior of serpents. A form of Augury.

ORLOG (Old Norse, or, ur: "primal"; log: "law") The law of existence in Norse traditions, similar to karma. The agents of Orlog are the Norns that represent the past and present coming together to mold the future. Orlog teaches that the present is the inescapable result of all that has gone before, but current actions can still affect the outcome of the future.
ORNISCOPY, ORINITHOMANCY: Divination by interpreting the appearance and behavior of birds, especially their flight or song. A form of Augury.
OSTARA:
The Lesser Sabbat celebrated on or about March 21st, marking the beginning of the return of the evident fertility of the Earth and the return of the God, the Sun. It is a celebration of Balance and Harmony as the day and night are equal in length. Ostara is a fire and fertility festival. Also known as Alban Eiler, Meán Earraigh, Spring Equinox, Spring Solstice, Vernal Equinox.
