Each person should have to pick a unique persona and then express it in poetry, photography or drawing? Or maybe all three.

2009-02-21 [moira hawthorne]: well my personal feelings for the use of stock art... is you should use your own photos if you arent using them for anything other than ref to make your own painting... if all you are doing if putting other people's photos together its cut and paste...

but the mode of opertation for the UNofficial contests is all and any media... to encourage creativity...

2009-02-21 [Rice]: I think some stock art is nice, so long as the person is good at it and merges the pictures, feathers layers ect.
However if they just copy and paste things its ickie.

my peeve is when stock 'art' artist gets praised... when the creativity and beauty is in the stock itself... than it should be the stock photographer getting praised...

Although I can see instances where the inclusion of elements an others photograph might be necessary when the artist does not have access to an element they wish to include. A narwal horn for a unicorn. An Ancient tree for the background to a figure. And there is the whole art of collage. But I can also see pitfalls of opening up those possibilities.
I wonder if it would help if folks who used stock were required to acknowledge the photographer they used and show that the stock was either creative commons licenced for that purpose or that they had consent from the artist. But even as I am writing this I am wondering If I am just opening a whole kettle of worms.......

2009-02-21 [moira hawthorne]: I think we need to have faith that the artist will create their own new unique art... that stock will be only one of the many tools in their bucket... that their heart will dictate their vision and that they will be creative... as the spirit of these wikis is trying to encourage

2009-02-21 [LynnAnneBrown]: Absolutely, I think these kind of discussions are the foundation of what we are doing here and for them to get lost would be a shame.

Also I was thinking we might create our own "Stock Exchange", A place where people can request photo's they need for something they are working on and for people to offer photo's that they think will help another project along. We could also use this as a forum for discussing the use of stock and how to credit other artists when we incorporate their work in ours.

2009-02-21 [moira hawthorne]: I have always been willing to take a photo or 3 whenever anyone asks for something... I think thats more useful than a hundred random images that dont suit the particular idea and position that the artist is trying to portray... beside there is already an HUGE stock image collection being created by [Hedda] here on ET... maybe what we should have written in the wiki is a list of member willing to take reference photos and a request section for a particular image

2009-02-21 [LynnAnneBrown]: Perfect, I agree, it is frustrating looking hundreds of images looking for the picture that catches the pose or angle or expression you need to reference for a drawing or include in a photomanip, especially if in the end you do not find anything at all. Or if what you do find is........close, but not quite what you were hoping for. Also it will give the folk who enjoy taking the stock photo's a direction to go in. Although I enjoyed taking the photo's I have entered in the Face Reference Competition, I have already submitted a hundred photo's and have only began exploring the possibilities of what could be done with photo's of the face. And although it has been a fun exercise, It would be even more fun If I was helping to interpret a specific vision.
