Daemon

[bluefan44]: Daemons are an extension of ones soul. Bound to humans from birth they are able to change shape until the person reaches adulthood at which time the Daemon is forced to choose a single shape for the remainder of it and the person's lives. They are able to speak and also posses the intelligence of a person. Bound together, they are not able to be separated from eatch other for more than a hundred or so yards (Distance varies between the pairings). Since they are a piece of the persons soul they are not actually born. At the time of the naming of the child they appear from the shadows and become real.
(Like the description from The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass books by Phillip Pullman.)

A Daemon could be simply describes as an incorporeal ("bodiless") spirit.
