[To the Welkin]

I'd like to introduce you to one of Elftown's fun, relaxed artists: [To the Welkin]!

<img:stuff/xvb45GH.jpg?y=300>

Is there a story behind your username?
Perhaps not the most original inspiration behind a username, but it's actually a shortened version of one of my favorite black metal albums entitled 'Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk', by the band Emperor.

What all do you do on Elftown?
I lurk, communicate with old friends, write private thoughts in my little diary, and scout for art that speaks to me. I enjoy posting little snippets of my own writings and creations; I'm usually quite shy about my art but Elftown has helped me to come out of my shell a bit. There is something very frightening yet liberating about exposing your innermost depths to the eyes of others.

Do you prefer using a specific medium for art?
Typically I gravitate towards charcoals, pen/ink, and the biggest paper I can find. However, more recently in the last year or so I have dabbled in found object sculpture, due to having an apartment and no money to buy decor. You have to get creative when you're poor, haha. I experimented with random gadgets, car and clock parts, woodwork, even silverware. It opened me up to a whole new experience and perspective. I hope to continue this trend and not revert to one specific medium each time I feel an artistic endeavor coming on.
What do you do for a living?
I am a hair stylist. It's not exactly my dream job, but I am determined to find the loopholes of being an artist in modern society. I think it is important to enjoy what you are doing in life. I'm figuring it out as I go along. I do not desire vast amounts of money or recognition, just connectivity with like-minded souls, and endless open doors, as a result of continuously taking risks and putting myself and my art out there.

[Synirria]

This month's interview is with a fish-lover and enthusiastic role-player! I hope you have fun getting to know more about [Synirria]!
<img:http://elftown.eu/stuff/aj/100117/1375711190.jpg?y=0&x=500>

Is there a story behind your username?
Well the full name was taken so I shortened it. It was supposed to be Eraisuithiel (Air-eye-soo-ee-thee-ell) which is Elvish for Michelle. Which is my real name. *smiles* I see all my friends on here with cool names that they've stuck with for years. Ive never found that one name so I just settled for something that matched me and sounded pretty. But I'm still not happy with it.

Do you know Elvish?
No not really. I've researched it and use it in a lot of my roleplays but I cant actually speak it if you were to walk up to me on a street. Though that would be awesome, like having a conversation in German. We should make Elvish an actual language.

What is it you mostly do on Elftown?
I role play...role play... and role play some more. Thats all I get on here for really. But its enough to bring me back over and over lol

What types of role-plays do you prefer?
I like it to have some romance in it. Because lets be honest...where there's romance, there's drama and it keeps the role-play interesting. I also prefer fantasy. You know, elves, dragons, orcs, etc. Its an entirely different world and I love being in it. Its a way for all the stress of the day to just be washed away. I can step out of reality and play in this fantasy life. Sometimes I even wish it were real.

What is your advice to all Elftowners?
Be creative. If you're feeling down and lost in your work, just remember what you've done before is wonderful and you can do it again.

[The Penguin Who Could Fly]

My latest interview was with one of Elftown's artists who enjoys creating art and perusing the art other Elftowners make: [The Penguin Who Could Fly]!
<img:http://elftown.eu/img/photo/31478_1265306752.jpg>

Is there a story behind your username?

Not really. I joined Elftown at the urging of [Purple Artichoke] back in the day. While signing up I asked her what my username should be, and she suggested "The Penguin Who Could Fly". I've always thought it sounded like an adorable childrens' story that would be fun to illustrate, so I kept it.

What is it you mostly do on Elftown?

I love being able to follow all the great artists who share their work around the website. I follow a lot of diaries to see all the interesting articles and art and other things members share. I keep in touch with a couple friends I've made here.

What inspires you to make art and crafts?

I've always loved it and found myself driven to it. I was given my first sketchbook when I was 9 and was constantly drawing. Back in the day I loved anime, it really lead me to make up my own stories and draw original characters. In art school, I focused a great deal more on working observationally. In art school (in mine at least) there's this real disconnect between art and craft, and the latter is often looked on as "low art" and not taken as seriously. As a result I ended up making a lot of quilts and printing on fabric. One of the first books I made had a soft quilted cover. It's interesting because a lot of the things that inspire me and motivate me aren't held in high regard by the high art community. I try to be aware of themes or methods from art history while also being influenced by anime, rpgs, cartoons, and fantasy novels.

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?

-Practice your art every day. Even if it's only sketches or freewrites, whether you want to or not, whether you think it's any good or not, you should make yourself work. To grow and produce worthwhile work, you have to simply produce a lot of work, or varying quality.
-Don't shy away from doing something different or taking a break from your usual style or methods. You might discover something new.
-Talk to people about art. Let them ask you questions that are hard to answer. Don't let criticism hurt your feelings, instead try to feel a sense of resolve from it. Most of the time, it's not personal.
-Never stop loving what you do.

What do you like most about science fiction and fantasy?

Fantasy and sci-fi can serve as a great escape, since the content is so different than the sort of day to day life I have. I find, though, I'm more drawn to the the parallels that exist when characters appear very real or remind me of people I know, or when themes or events mirror real life. I love when a story seems so different than my own life, but I can relate to it anyway.

What is your advice for all Elftowners?

Be awesome to each other.
Don't send pictures of your body parts unsolicited to anyone!
No, seriously, though, there are a lot of really great people here on Elftown, who make amazing things, do incredible work outside ET, and have awesome stories to share. If you're going to be part of Elftown, get to know some of these folks.
