This triggers a switch in his DNA witch turnes him into the Legendary Phantom Thief Dark whenever he experiances romantic feelings. The Spirit know as Dark has been passed down through the Niwa blood for over 300 years, and the only way Daisuke can stop himself from transforming is to make his true love, love him back.

On top of that Daisuke still has to attend high school, while trying not to transform... (what with all the girls around and everything) as well as avoid his class mate Satoshi who is also the special police commander in charg of capturing Dark.
