Roman Terms



-these are just terms and names for alot of things in Ancient Rome. Just thought this would help the RPG seem more realistic in some sense, or you can use it to just expand ur ever expandable knowledge, hehe


Rooms/Architectural Structures


Alae -- small rooms off the atrium where masks of ancestors were kept
Ampitheater -- an oval building designed for staging gladiatorial and animal spectacles.
Apodyterium -- dressing room with benches where slaves watched their masters' clothes
Atrium -- central courtyard of a Roman's dwelling. Most Roman homes had a series of rooms surrounding the atrium. the main reception area or salon of a Roman house
Balneae -- baths
Bibliotheca -- library in a Roman dwelling
Calidarium --the room in the baths that was nearest to the boilers and thus the hottest...prolly simliar to a jacuzzi or steam room today.
Civitas -- a small city or village
Compluvium -- an opening in the cieling of the atrium where light, air and rain entered
Corbita -- a slow sailing merchant vessel
Fanum -- a temple that was larger than a shrine but smaller than the regular temples
Fauces -- entrance passage or hallway leading from the door of the house into the atrium
Frigidarium -- a room in the baths where the water was cold
Impluvium -- ornamental rain-water basin in the atrium of a ROman dweling
Lararium -- the part of a Roman dwelling reserved for idols of deities
Palestra -- exercise courts at ROman baths
Peristyle -- a section of a Roman dwelling that enclosed a courtyard and surrounded by coullumns on the inside. The peristyle often included the bedrooms, shring, hearth and kitchen, dining room and library. wealthy homes had a garden as well
Sepulchrum -- a place of burial; a grave or tomb
Statio (pl. stationes) -- a stopping place along the road where horses could be changed for hire and were garrisons of soldiers who patrolled the roads were stationed. Generally there were stationes every 10 miles along the roads
Tepidarium -- the room in the baths where the water was warm and soothing
Triclinium -- dining room of a Roman dwelling, very ornate having columns and collections of statues.


Food


Cena -- dinner, the main meal of the day. The meal had 3 courses
Compotatio -- drinking party following a dinner
Falernian Wine -- wine made from Aminean grapes, strong and alcohol percentage of 15-16%. Color of Amber
Garum -- a strong fish sauce
Gustatio/Gustus -- appetizer course which consisted of vegetables, cheese, dormice, shellfish, fish and egg dishes.
Jentaculum -- breakfast; very simple, a cup of water and maybe a morsel of bread and honey, or something left over from the day before
Mulsum -- wine mixed with honey
Posca -- a drink made from acetum (vinegar-like alcohol) and water
Prandium -- lunch, very light, usually something left over from the previous' night's dinner
Secundae Mensae -- dessert; included cake, custard, oysters, smails, figs or apples


Items/Clothing


Arca -- a chest for blankets or clothes
Aureus (pl. aurei) -- a Roman gold coin equivalent to 25 denarii and weghing between 5-11 grams
Bracae -- trousers worn only by foreigners or soldiers living in cold climates
Calamus -- reed pen
Calcei -- heavier, leather-thonged shoes for outdoors
Cingulum -- a girdle or sword belt
Denarius (pl. denarii) -- a Roman unit of money equivalent to one day's pay for a common laborer
Fibula -- a buckle, brooch or clasp
Lectus -- a couch or bed
Palus -- a cloak-like garment worn by Roman women over a stola
Quadrans (pl. quadrantes) -- a bronze Roman coin. Four of them equal one copper coin, sixteen to equal a sesterce, and sixty four to equal a denarius
Scimitar -- a saber made of a curved blade with the cutting edge on the convex side
Sesterce -- a Roman coin, 1/4 pf a denarius
Soleae -- silppers or sandals worn inside the home
Stola -- a long, skirt-like garment worn by Roman women
Strigil -- a curved implement in bronze, iron or bone used after bathing to scrape sweat, oil and dead skin from the body
Strophium -- a head band
Stilus -- pen, of wood, metal or bone, used for writing on wax tablets
Subligaculum -- undergarments or shorts
Toga -- outer garment worn by Romans


People


Aedile -- four annually elected officials responsible for Rome's games, buildings, streets, markets, and grain supply
Auriga -- charioteer
Catamite -- a boy used by a man for homosexual purposes
Centurion -- officer commanding a century(100) in the ROman legions. A legion had 60 centuries
Dominus -- a master of slaves
Flamines -- individual priests who were dedicated to the service of one particular god
Haruspex (Pl. haruspices) -- a person at the temple who supposedly could interpret supernatural signs by examining the vital organs of animals sacrificed by priests
Praetor Urbanus -- dealth with legal cases between Roman citizens
Praetor-- a lawyer
Proconsul -- a governor or military commander of a ROman province
Publicani -- tax collectors
Senate -- composed of officials from families and acted as an assembly
Sicarii (pl. sicarius) -- zealots who prey on travelers
