The Neurotic's Summer
Summer is a season of sultry meanace. All of nature is alive and snapping. Danger lurks in trees and bushes, flits about in the air, patrols the waters, and crawls upon the very earth itself. The chain of life is in state of bloody fullness, each link protecting its territory, wildly reproducing, blindly gorging itself on the unlucky members of neighboring links.
Neurotics make themselves needlessly susceptible to this festering Grand Guignol by blithely venturing out of doors. Despite bitterpast experiences we nose into unfamiliar places in an attempt to commune with nature. We wear fewer clothes. We are, in effect, asking for trouble and summer is more than prepared to dish it out.
Luckily, while the irritations and worries of summer are staggering numerous, most of them are minor; while winter threatens us with isolation, starvation, and death, summer fosters rashes and a lack of pockets. Many of summer's problems are also quite easily avoided. The simple act of staying indoors, for instance, eliminates much that is harmful. If you must go outside, avoid extremely hot places and also shady, cool, moist places and you'll find that things go much more smoothly. And for heaven's skae, don't eat that chicken salad sandwich that's been sitting in the sun since 11 o'clock this morning.
