About the artist and why this picture was chosen for the daily picture:

There are several truly impressive things accomplished in this slightly humourous image. Inspired by Dungeons and Dragons (it does seem remnicant of a Monster Manual) and the Three Muskateers (evident in the gentleman's dress and choice of weaponry), [Voden]'s goal was to play with shadows in a way that the Beholder was emerging from them. While that specific idea may not have been reached to complete success, the shadows in this picture are still impressive. The work on the scales, mouth, and especially the eye of the beast are phenominal, particularly the way the light catches on the eye. Note the fallen baby beholders in the lower corners, and the story that accompanies the image will start to surface.
