"Welcome...Eye Love Elftown"

             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
All of a sudden, I opened my eyes,
The presence I felt was a big surprise.
As I looked down at my own little feet,
There beside 'em, I needn't repeat.
There was a foot the size of me!
Lord have mercy! This couldn't be!
Without raising my head one little spec,
I rolled my eyes upward just tilting my neck.
Enveloped I was, with such a great fear.
I wanted the earth to swallow me here.
The next thing I knew, I was hearing a voice.
By now I knew I had really no choice.
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The words that I heard were gentle and kind.
How they sunk in, to this scared, little mind,
I haven't a clue as to how or to why.
I thought I's a gonner and surely would die.
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
With a deep, gentle tone, he commanded me
To raise my head for my eyes to see.
Slowly I raised my lowly, ol' head.
I remember my heart was heavy with dread.
When at last my eyes looked upon the face,
My heart began racing at a much faster pace.
The beast that I'd seen before in the light
Was standing before me in all of his height.
In spite of his tremendous, oversize
My fears dissolved as I looked in his eyes.
The depth that I saw would so frighten most,
But this gentle giant was a welcoming host.
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
He beckoned the crowd to gather around.
They quickly did so, without making a sound.
As if he weren't quite tall enough,
He straightened right up and let out a puff.
He summoned his queen in such a sweet tone.
He cherished her greatly and let it be known.
As soon as she stood right by his side,
He spoke in a voice that was so dignified.
With a little to do about that and this,
He paused for a moment to give her a kiss.
With a grin on his face, he motioned the guard
To start a drum roll in the courtyard.
So everyone scurried and headed that way,
Except for the couple, who took a delay.
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
When all was hushed, no milling around,
The silence was broken with a mighty sound.
As the king and queen stepped into the square,
It was plain to see the respect that was there.
The king's words seemed generally the same,
Until the roll and he mentioned my name.
The Dragon King, he motioned to me
"Step forward," he stated, "let us all see!
The one that is here and travels around
Helping the homeless in each little town.
Here is a badge that I'm awarding you
For kindness you show and the deeds you do."
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I paused for a minute for suddenly I thought,
My horn's condition made me really distraught.
How could I step out into the square
With a blob like this poking out of my hair?
It was then that I saw a small, peaceful brook.
I ran over quickly to take a good look.
As I meandered my way down to the stream,
The fear gripped so hard, I wanted to scream.
As I approached and neared the water's edge,
I closed my eyes and so made a pledge.
If only the horn so limp on my face
Would again stand up in stature and grace.
As I gained the courage to take a peek,
I suddenly slipped and fell in the creek.
When I gained my footing on a rough, old stone,
             I looked around, but I wasn't alone.
There on the shore and well up the bank
Everyone stood, while my heart just sank.
As I turned to cover my head in shame,
One glance in the water and I became
             A unicorn embellished with joy!
My horn had returned, the real McCoy!
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
There on the bank with a mighty, big roar,
Stood King and Queen Dragon like never before.
In his hand he was waving something at me.
As he got closer, it was then I could see.
The badge I'd forgotten when rittled with fear,
In a rush to my brain it all became clear.
As the king bent down to drape and adorn,
This badge I'd earned, to hang on my horn.
Then in the shadow of a tree on shore,
My conscience reared up like never before.
There he stood my rider, again.
Just like before, he's holding a pen.
As I gladly bowed down in respect to the king,
I heard that old clock as it started to ring.
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I closed my eyes to picture once more,
The sight again, when I had stood at the shore.
When I opened my eyes, alas, it was night.
At first it startled me, gave me a fright.
But there at the gate, he was standing there still,
And in his left hand, he was holding a quill.
I convinced myself of little esteem
I had just woke up from a wonderful dream.
Again, I approached the squeaky, front gate.
Then something happened. Could it be fate?
The badge I had earned in a fabulous dream,
Was here with me, yet, or so it did seem.
             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I touched and I felt it, rubbed it some, too,
Just had to be sure, it really was true!
Soon I heard the "Welcome", again
It was at that moment, I decided, then...
To award this badge to my new-found friend!

~ THE END!~

Well, here it is! I've been wanting to get this posted so much. I'm working on the illustrations for it in between the other projects that I do. I honestly would be curious to know what folks think about this story(poem). I'm thinking that maybe I could donate this to Elftown, someplace where it would be appropiate, but I would want to donate it complete with its illustrations! OK... Whalah!!! : )  *_~
