What Features Are There?

The idea of the features is to showcase the work of Elftowners (or Elftowners themselves!) so that they get more attention and notice within the community. The features update at different rates, and have different rules about what they will feature.

The Main Street features are not competitions; you do not 'win' them. There are, however, some quality controls in place – not every nomination will be automatically featured.

Who Can Be Featured, and how often?

Most people can be featured! But only if they've been nominated (see below for details about how to do that – remember that for the Daily Poem only you can submit your work). So if you want to see something featured, get nominating!

The Featured Member only allows a user to be featured once. The Featured Art, whilst technically allowing someone to be featured multiple times, very rarely does so and prefers finding new members to feature each time.

The Daily Poem, Featured Wiki and Featured Story try to strike a balance between finding new people to feature and recognising prolific poets, wiki-makers or writers.

Who Can't Be Featured?

People who frequently break the rules are not considered for the Featured Member, but are still eligible for every other feature.

The bosses who run a particular feature cannot be featured for their feature, but can be featured on others. e.g. none of the Featured Image Bosses can have their art featured on the Featured Art but could have their poetry featured on the Daily Poem.

Council members may be featured, but there are strict rules about how frequently they can be featured. This varies from feature to feature, but is usually something like 'only every fifth feature may be a council member'. That of course, doesn't mean that every fifth feature will be a Council member, but just means they certainly won't be featured more frequently than that.

The Council cannot be featured on the Featured Member. Any member may also choose to opt out of consideration for the Featured Member by messaging one of the Featured Member Bosses and asking not to be featured if they should ever be nominated.

Updates

As previously mentioned, updates happen at different rates for different features. And who does these updates? Each feature has its own team of dedicated workers whose job it is to make sure the features run regularly.

Nominations

Each of the features thrives off the help of regular Elftowners. For each feature there are different ways for things to be recognised, and the more people that nominate things for the features, the better features we'll all have to enjoy.

- Daily Poem (members nominate their own poetry by placing it on the Daily Poem page)
- Featured Art (members nominate other members' art by using the forum <joinforum:2054:nominatenow> (Featured Art Nominations) or contacting one of the Featured Image Bosses)
- Featured Member (members nominate other people by placing a comment on the Featured Member page)
- Featured Wiki (members nominate anything, own or others' on Wiki Nominations)
- Featured Story (members nominate anything, own or others' by using the forum, <joinforum:2405:nightingale> (Featured Story Nominations) or by contacting one of the Featured Story Bosses)
- The Main Street Poll: (members nominate their own poll suggestions by placing them on Suggest A Poll)

Rewards

When something is featured, there is a reward for the person who made it: a badge. If they are featured more than once (say, have three different poems in Daily Poem) the badge stays the same but the badge slot will be edited to say "I've been X n times!"

I believe the Council should be able to be a Featured Member, just on the same one-in-five rate as the other Features. While the Council does get more attention, that's no reason to exclude them as normal members - just don't include anything official in the Feature. If [windowframe] is really popular among members due to her art and roleplaying pages, it'd make sense to feature her because of those. :P

2013-12-22 [windowframe]: Whatever the actual reason someone is being featured it never looks good to other people. It just looks like nepotism, and it's even worse when you're featuring an actual friend, rather than a piece of work by a friend. In the particular case of the Featured Member, the purpose of it is to draw attention to interesting people you might not know, or to acknowledge and share people who do a lot for the community. The council already gets a lot more attention and they already get acknowledgement for pretty much everything they do with a myriad range of badges. They really don't need to be featured.

2013-12-22 [Stephen]: Hm. I can't debate that point. Okay then, I understand the reasoning and it does make sense. I can see why featuring Council members could likely upset people.
