2011-04-21 [Mortified Penguin]: A single elimination would be a lot quicker. If you lose one game, you're out of the tournament. With double elimination, if you lose, you get sent to the losers bracket to play another game.

These images are barely animated as it is. Do you honestly think sparkles would be considered annoying? And it just so happens that the person who is going to win first place made the first place trophy, the person who is going to win second made the second place trophy, and all the participants worked equally together to create the Participant Brick™.
