2009-02-20 [LynnAnneBrown]: The other thing I noticed was the triple spiral in the bottom corners. The ones that look like a bit like Yin Yang symbols with an extra piece. I have always liked that shape, I used to doodle it a lot when I was a kid. Usually into little round windows that I would put just below the roof peak in houses and cottages, but elsewhere as well. I know that it has a traditional meaning, I've seen the symbol around, most recently in the center hub of a "Wheel of Dharma" image I was looking at.

It is interesting to note that that center image is known by Buddhists as "Gankyil" the wheel of joy

I also found it interesting to note that the Wheel of Dharma in it's most common form, strongly resembles our pagan wheel of the year. Of course this should not be surprising since Buddhism was born out Hinduism in which triform gods and godesses abound.

What is also interesting to note is that the Gankyil is an attribute of the snow lion, which the wikipedia article on the snow lion states is "somewhat energetically comparable to the western unicorn, though without a horn"

but the mode of opertation for the UNofficial contests is all and any media... to encourage creativity...

Although I can see instances where the inclusion of elements an others photograph might be necessary when the artist does not have access to an element they wish to include. A narwal horn for a unicorn. An Ancient tree for the background to a figure. And there is the whole art of collage. But I can also see pitfalls of opening up those possibilities.
I wonder if it would help if folks who used stock were required to acknowledge the photographer they used and show that the stock was either creative commons licenced for that purpose or that they had consent from the artist. But even as I am writing this I am wondering If I am just opening a whole kettle of worms.......

Also I was thinking we might create our own "Stock Exchange", A place where people can request photo's they need for something they are working on and for people to offer photo's that they think will help another project along. We could also use this as a forum for discussing the use of stock and how to credit other artists when we incorporate their work in ours.

I think thats more useful than a hundred random images that dont suit the particular idea and position that the artist is trying to portray... beside there is already an HUGE stock image collection being created by [Hedda] here on ET... maybe what we should have written in the wiki is a list of member willing to take reference photos and a request section for a particular image

2009-02-21 [LynnAnneBrown]: Perfect, I agree, it is frustrating looking hundreds of images looking for the picture that catches the pose or angle or expression you need to reference for a drawing or include in a photomanip, especially if in the end you do not find anything at all. Or if what you do find is........close, but not quite what you were hoping for. Also it will give the folk who enjoy taking the stock photo's a direction to go in. Although I enjoyed taking the photo's I have entered in the Face Reference Competition, I have already submitted a hundred photo's and have only began exploring the possibilities of what could be done with photo's of the face. And although it has been a fun exercise, It would be even more fun If I was helping to interpret a specific vision.

I have like 4 decks... one was given to me by my teacher... as a good starter deck... but it left me cold... i didnt get anything from it... I have 3 I use for different reasons... a celtic tree deck a norse rune deck and a faery deck...
