Chinese New Year Photography Competition

2009-01-13 [Artsieladie]: Actually, you make a very good point, since with our own New Year, we can't take photos before the New Year's celebrations, of course. Now that I think about it, when the Chinese New Year is over, the animal that has become the symbol, is the symbol for the entire year. :P

I still have no clue on how anyone will be able to fulfill this theme. The only thing I can thing of is taking photos of symbols of ox-years like myself who is born in 1973.

2009-01-13 [Artsieladie]: I'm kinda' blank on this myself, unless they take a photo of an ox, dress up the ox or the photo of with a Chinese flavour. The other chance would be if someone attends a Chinese New Year's Celebration, but I don't know how many will be attending one. :P

2009-01-13 [Hedda]: One can find a Chinese restaurant at that day or some day afterwards, maybe? A Chinese restaurant is way easier to find than an ox.

2009-01-13 [Xuan.]: Perhaps the theme may need to be changed or fixed up a bit? If not, may I make a suggestion that someone make a contest for Chinese New Year Photos? It'd be nice, and cultural. We are having our celebration at the Civic center we have. It's small, and we are a small town, but our crew ((the lion dance, and music)) will be performing here, then they will be going to different places throughout Atlanta, and other cities to perform and recieve money from restaurants.

That, or 'activities'.

2009-01-14 [Artsieladie]: Chinese restaurants are definitely easier to find than an ox, but around my neck of the woods, they will put up some decorations to honour the Chinese New Year event, but not all that elaborate, unless I would drive into a city.

Hmm... the Chinese themselves go all out for this occasion, which includes elaborate decorations, costumes and masks and maybe, especially masks. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing someone putting several pictures of such on a wiki page, if someone can get photos of a Chinese New Year Celebration. ..But this is just a mere thought. :P

2009-01-14 [Xuan.]: :] my family is going to do the dragon dance, including music, symbols, and costumes. there will also be the girls in the traditional dress, but the dress is slightly different from the chinese, because i am vietnamese. the vietnamese also celebrate this new year, but we just call it the vietnamese new year. I will be sure to take many pictures, and update you all to link to that wiki. The guys are working extremely hard this year, waking up early in the mornings to gather and practice. My brother always plays symbols every year, and my cousins are always parts of the dragon/lion.

2009-01-14 [Artsieladie]: Well, it is customary to have the normal/regular ways to bring in the Chinese New Year, but at some point or points, the creature of the new year coming in is featured. In this case, it would be the ox, of course. Even in the decorating for, they will usually incorporate the creature to be, and often their paper placemats (Chinese restaurants), for example, will feature the creature of that particular year for the duration of that year. I dunno, but perhaps, we can aim for Chinese celebrations, decorations, and customs for their New Year, but it should depict the creature of the incoming year in some fashion. In this case the ox. *still thinking* :P

2009-01-14 [Artsieladie]: Aye. ;) When I was living in Hawaii and attended a Chinese New Year Celebration, the creature of the upcoming year was featured as part of the celebrations and ceremonies. :P
