News example

If you have something new happening in Elftown (a new wikipage or a forum), and you would like to have it announced in the news, this is how to do it:

<img:stuff/Button_Diamond_ETIvory%20copy.gif>Ask yourself: is it news-worthy?
If it is something you have made recently, and it is open for the community to participate, then it can go on the news. If it's been around for a long time (over a year), or if it is a personal thing that you just want to show off, then it doesn't belong in the news.
-Examples for good news: new contests, new roleplaying games, new forums, new wikipages that invite ET-members to participate, new polls that have a generally interesting topic.
-Examples for not news: personal galleries of your art or photos, personal news of any kind, personal polls, stories, old forums, old polls, old wikipages (submit those to Wiki Nominations instead).

<img:stuff/Button_Diamond_ETIvory%20copy.gif>Make a wikipage for the newsitem.
Include a headline, and up to about 100 words of text of what it is all about (be concise!) You can also include a banner or an emoticon. See old news items for examples: <URL:news.html>
-At the bottom of the news item also add: Got news? See news example.
-For help on how to make a wikipage, see CNETG9.

<img:stuff/Button_Diamond_ETIvory%20copy.gif>Leave a link to the wikipage containing your newsitem in a comment onto this page.
A member of the Council will update it onto the Main Street.

The crew retains a right to edit or reject any newsitem. The usual rules also apply: no sex or violence on the Main Street, and Don't Be An Asshole.

2013-11-06 [iippo]: I'd prefer to be able to link to this page http://elftown.eu/news.html but I'm not sure if there's a way to make it neat. And it also has the www or http:// problem.

2013-11-07 [Mortified Penguin]: I much prefer to get my Elftown news from the unofficial elftown news... Despite that it's been a few years since it was last updated...

2013-11-07 [Mortified Penguin]: Also, <news:Unknown news> (which is typed as <news:>) and <URL:news.html> should work for you. You can easily link to any page on Elftown by using the <URL:> thing, just post whatever follows "elftown.eu/" in the link you want shortened after the colon.

2013-11-07 [iippo]: Thank you. :)

2013-11-10 [Sunrose]: Elftown Meet Amsterdam 2014. The top part is for the news, the bottom part is for the wiki itself.. :)

2013-11-12 [iippo]: It's too personal, and not really possible for the whole Elftown community to participate in.

2013-11-12 [iippo]: Its over a year old :/

2013-11-12 [Sunrose]: Define personal. Everyone is allowed to come, the rules don't seem to require more atm.

Why can't something old be in the news if for instance something new is happening or perhaps a lot of people still haven't found it?
What if you copy your old stuff onto a new wiki, would that make it 'new'?

I'm kind of bummed out that this new option has so many rules, so far people haven't been running here because they all want their stuff in the news. Even though I'd love to see more newsupdates, even if they might seem random sometimes.

2013-11-13 [iippo]: LMGTFY... define personal: "belonging to or affecting a particular person rather than anyone else."
It's about Punk o.O It's about meeting a particular person in a specific place, and that is pretty prohibitive to most people (cost of travel, distance etc...) A person would have to be pretty emotionally attached to Punk personally to want to participate in spite of those prohibitive aspects.

Because... it's news o.O News are new. The whole point is to share what new is going on in Elftown. Sharing old stuff is what all the main street features do.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

2013-11-13 [iippo]: Maybe old things like the Chess Tournament would be good news if/when they have another round. But looking at the wiki, it looks like the tournament is in progress? Like, how would a new person participate in that when the bracket is full?

2013-11-13 [Mortified Penguin]: Well, that tournament is pretty much over, since people just disappeared.

2013-11-14 [Sunrose]: ABCDEFG...except that more people are coming and a number of them won't actually be there for Punk. For instance Mort might be there if Hedda is there, Isi might be there if Key and Ally are there etcetc. It is called Elftown meet, not Punk meet, for a reason. His visit is just what started it.

That is why I added if something new was happening and I wasn't advocating for Mort's wiki.

2013-11-14 [Mortified Penguin]: :(

2013-11-14 [Mortified Penguin]: Y'know, MY successful news wiki has a section called "Olds", so the news doesn't always have to be new.

2013-12-22 [Stephen]: I third? the point that just because something is "old" it shouldn't be instantly omitted. There's quite a bit of older and interesting pages (that are still active, memberwise) that don't get seen and brushing older pages to Featured Wiki makes the process kind of a pain. I think it should be a case by case basis.

2015-04-21 [Stephen]: I wanna faff this, but I don't know if this page is actually official or if it's iippo's personal page. :(
