Gimp - to install

This is a tutorial for installing www.gimp.org , as it can be a bit confusing. This is how to install it on Windows, if you have something else, well.. I can't help you then. I made it because so many people keep asking me or my friends how to do it, when they decided to try Gimp. (Which is a free art program, that might be slightly annoying before you learn it, but still are way better than MS Paint as many por artists are stuck with ;)

OK, first go to this link: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
It's just easier from there.

Now this is what you'll see (but without all the red stuff:P). You have to download two things, first the program itself (1) and then Runtime Environment (2 or 3). See which runtime environment you need by checking which versions of Windows they are for; I made a thin, red line under the text where it's written, in the screenshot.

Now press the first link (1). It will take you to a page where you'll automatically get it downloaded.

If it doesn't work, press the blue link. Then chose save and press OK.

Now do the same thing with the Runtime Environment, the one you figured that you needed for your version of windows. (2 or 3 on the first screenshot.)

When you have dowloaded both files, find where you saved them on your computer and then open the Runtime nvironment FIRST, before you try to open the program itself:P

I hope this helped and that I made everything clear now, without making mistakes..it was a while since I downloaded it myself. Happy use of your Gimp!

2007-02-14 [iippo]: Hmm, does it work about the same for Mac users? I know you can get GIMP for mac... so it might be useful to explain how you get it on that (if you know anyone who has a mac and wouldn't mind screen shotting and all that)?

2007-02-14 [Zab]: I have never installed it for Mac (or even used one), that's why, I don't know how to do..but I could link to the place where you download it for Mac too, of course..

2007-02-14 [Zab]: http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/ not sure that even helps..O_o

2007-02-14 [Hedda]: Well... For Mandriva Linux:
Write this on a (root) prompt:

urpmi gimp

Other Linux distributions have similar stuff like "urpmi". "apt-get" for Debian, for example.

But Gimp is already installed on a Linux-box, so you shouldn't need to bother at all <img:stuff/sutN.gif>

2007-02-14 [Zab]: Eh..ok..I understand nothing of that anyway..

2007-02-14 [Hedda]: Translation: "Linux rocks, Windows sucks. Bla bla bla" <img:stuff/mood5-gif.gif>

2007-02-14 [Zab]: Yeah, riiight..XD
