What would make your friend join Elftown?

[Hedda] wants to know!

This page is some sort of TODO-list for [Hedda]. I know pretty well what Elftowners want, especially the most actives ones. But for Elftown to survive, it has to get bigger and then it's important to know what can make people join Elftown.

I'm not interested in vague things or things I can't do anything about, but you're free to brainstorm about them in the comments.

1) Because they have to write many words in the presentation.

2) Because their English isn't good enough.

3) Because it seems complicated (How can I make the basic things easier?).

4) Because they aren't interested in fantasy and science fiction (That shouldn't be a reason! Everyone likes a part of it!).

5) Because they feel that Facebook/Deviantart can do what they want (Facebook don't allow big images and Deviantart generally suck, but do people feel this is important enough and what more can I do?)

6) Probably seeing Elftown advertised which includes what all you can do on it, and how it's better than Myspace which I think it is.

2010-02-22 [Linderel]: I concur.

2010-02-22 [Cillamoon]: Fourths

2010-02-23 [Chimes]: Has my vote. :)

2010-02-23 [Mortified Penguin]: I disagree! *flips over a table*

2010-02-23 [Chel.]: Why so?

2010-02-23 [Mortified Penguin]: Because I HATE tables!

2010-02-23 [Chel.]: Oh- well... ok then.

2010-02-23 [Mortified Penguin]: Just look at them... they think they're so much better than me just because they have four legs... well, where's your arms, stupid?! *smashes a table*

2010-03-18 [Duke Devlin]: Right Mort.
Anyway, I don't see why this hasn't been done yet? Surely if we all (for the most part) agree that it needs to be changed, and a competition is the best way to do that, we should just damn well do it? =/

2010-03-18 [windowframe]: We could get rid of the front-page altogether. <_< If we can pretty Main Street up enough, then can't we just use that instead? Stick a little login box at the top or something - that way anyone who just goes to elftown.eu would be able to see the latest news item, some of the calendar notes down the sides, and some of the features, which y'know... might encourage them to join.

2010-03-18 [Chel.]: I agree with SilverFire! It's how most sites are run now-a-day too! It would be a good way for a user to get a feel for the place. Of course...they shouldn't be able to see users profiles, but that would be all the more reason for them to join!

2010-03-19 [Mortified Penguin]: Whatever happened to the awesome city that used to be on the front page? I assume it was taken away for a reason?

And I miss seeing a different picture welcoming me to Elftown each time. Now it's just that same old annoying one with [Hedda]'s head sticking out of the bush. It makes me want to smash his face with a table. Stupid tables...

2010-03-19 [Teufelsweib]: no idea why, it seems like only hedda thinks having this image permanent on the front page is a good idea..

2010-03-22 [Duke Devlin]: Upon further thought, I agree with Silvie. She's right. It's a lot more modern to have the Main Street and the login page merged.

2010-03-22 [wicked fae mage]: Silver's idea is also a smart one without the hassle of a contest and initializing the new image(s).

And the complicated things for some of my newer friends has always been the tags and the links...both of which just take a little getting used to...(impatient people seem to ignore the help page)

But, I'll give a few of the many reasons ET is better than myspace...

ET allows collaborations on wiki pages

ET has contests and other fun activities

ET isn't focused on the number of strangers who add you

ET allows authors, poets, photographers, role-players, and all other artists and fantasy lovers to shine

ET doesn't annoy you with videos or songs jumbling your sound when you visit somebody's page

ET doesn't overload your computer with an activity stream

ET doesn't have invites to farmville and other stupid internet games spamming your inbox

ET doesn't get hacked every other week requiring you to scan for keyloggers because you logged in on a particular day

[Hedda] doesn't try to be friends with everybody instantly offering no help even though he claims to(I have always found that creepy and annoying)

Your "friends" have to go through an effort to make you an Elftown in your name to prank you/make you look like an idiot/a jerk/ a pervert unlike myspace, facebook, myyearbook etc.

Elftown is easy on the eyes at all times (especially since you can set the theme to one that's not harsh on the eyes)

Bulletins aren't posted every three seconds with a weird rape story or murderous wraith etc

Elftown has buttons that make it easy to navigate and easy to understand

You have to receive a message from a person for a friend request which prevents random creepy people from adding you without at least looking at your page

:)

2010-03-23 [Aeolynn]: I don't know where to say this so that it is actually looked at, but having the last version of a wiki page in the sidebar when the roleplay is about twenty pages long is kinda annoying :\ even worse when they start getting over a hundred. Is there a way to turn it off?

2010-03-26 [Hedda]: [Aeolynn]: Yes, if you're me. I reprogrammed it. Now it's not like that.

2010-03-26 [Hedda]: Elfpack has the start-page and the index-page looking pretty much like each other. I'm not sure if that's the way to go.

2010-05-09 [Hendercrazy]: I'd personally like to see Elftown have a stronger presence on Elfwood in some way. So that more fellow artists, writers and fantasy/sci-fi fans could possibly have the opportunity to find their way here. Thomas has really done a nice job overhauling it. So much so that I'll be getting back to some regular activity there soon. I'll also be doing my part to encourage folks to come here from there as well. :)

2010-06-23 [Sagacious Turkey]: I might could get some people to join Elftown. If someone would make an informational flyer about Elftown, I could put them up at different campuses and artistic places.
