Relax; if this is really who you are, just be yourself. If people are worth your while, they're worth explaining to if they get hold of the wrong end of the stick, and don't understand -- but apart from them, why worry about people getting the wrong impression about you? You're not doing this for appearances, so why worry so much about them? I gave up my cloak(s) (well, most of them) due to a combination of bad associations and an international move -- now I miss them for their warmth & comfort.

If you're *not* a "Playgan", why worry? If you *were* a Playgan, *that* would be the problem -- not people looking at you funny because of it. You seem to be a pretty decent person, trying to find their way in life, and through the hazards on the way into adulthood... <shrugs> ...so calm down, you'll live longer, and what's more, people will take you more seriously. It's like the old saying "if you act like you've got something to be defensive about, people will assume you do".

The very idea that parents cannot teach their children religion, and give them an option to worship how they please is disgusting, but again, it is a good indication of the inequality and tolerance that exists in our oh so "civilized" times.

2005-06-02 [Falx]: I think that perhaps there is this fear that Wicca and Paganism is going to crowd out Christianity. I mean, it's what Christianity did to paganism after all. So, maybe that's why people like that judge react so vehemently. I know that it doesn't excuse them from breaking the whole "Freedom of Religion/ Seperation of Church and State" amendment in the Constitution, but it's the best reason I can think of. There's just no reasoning with the unreasonable.
2005-06-02 [hanhepi]: maybe. it does seem he is wildly misinformed about wicca. i mean, like that article said, the MILITARY reccognises Wicca as a religion, so a government agency (DOD) already conciders it "mainstream" enough to have a "chaplin" for it, and provide services for it. hell, i live right by Camp Lejune (large marine corp instilation) and to the best of my knowledge, its the only place in the county that holds wiccan services.

There are people who are really lost in the fog of sorrow in their own head, to the point where they can't even see the real world outside of themselves, and they need help... ...but although there are rules of thumb about "quiet ones", and so on, you can never really know which people really need help, and which need to wake up to themselves and get on with life. All I know to do about it is try to be there for the ones who really seem open to accepting help, and not take on responsibility for problems that I didn't cause and can't help. As for the ones who use suicide as a threat to manipulate people, it's been done to me... <MORE>

Or, in the case of the example at hand, giving in to whatever demands the person is making, so they "won't suicide". It's also important to remember that if you're treating a person decently and appropriately, and they DO suicide, it's NOT BECAUSE OF YOU. It's not necessarily because of THEM, either -- the fault very likely lies either in a screwed-up biochemistry, or a screwed-up person (or people) who did something really nasty to the person, in a way that's seriously injured them psychologicall

If the person's suffering makes you angry, be angry at the right person -- the person who hurt them so badly that they couldn't find their way back out of that headspace. A lot of abuse survivors don't -- they either stay victims, inside, constantly expecting to be re-victimized (and easy prey for the predators of this world), or they choose the only other role they know to exist, & become victimizers themselves. All of which is only true for the real suicidal types (some of whom can be just as histrionic about it as the "play for sympathy" types).

If you wouldn't put up with this person attacking other people, on a space you control, why let them do it to you? It's not any different, & you deserve your own respect & protection, too. If you're trying to handle this guy gently because of what happened to his girlfriend, why not recommend grief counseling? It's not your field, or your job.

I'm not saying that I back this side, but being the debater that I am, I find it important to see both sides. Now there ARE people who find it that they just aren't getting enough attention. They may not be a shallow person, or feed on attention. Attention is just something that everyone needs. They could have an older brother who has a serious disease, and said persons parents spend most of their time with said older brother. After a while, it may get a little tiring. They want something that will make said persons parents pay attention to them. They try other things...

So they turn to something that they're in control of that is also serious and dangerous. Cutting. What parent wouldn't freak out if they saw their child with scars on said childs wrists? 2005-06-06 [Rondel]: Actually, my comment on cutting was an adjunct to my comment about suicide (a response to someone commenting on a friend who suicided after calling them, not about anyone saying anything about someone cutting), and my concern was that people realize that when people do this, it usually isn't because of the people around them (at least the ones who treat them decently), although those people can (& do) often wind up feeling guilty. The point was that the responsibility for the pain lies with the person who hurt the person who now cuts/suicides because of that pain inside them. My intent was NOT to judge the person, but to point the anger in the right direction.
2005-06-06 [Rondel]: FYI, I didn't follow the link to the girl's house (I assume we're talking about the one who was described as "look at her mood"), so I had no idea that my comments might possibly be taken as being related to her. If I had, I would probably have stayed off of the topic, because I *don't* like making people feel like I'm talking about them behind their backs. My worry was strictly about the person who had had to deal with the "survivors guilt" that comes with being the final contact of a suicide. I included cutters in my remark because a lot of people don't seem to realize that most SIs do it for reasons related to deep personal pain; yes, they may be messed up, but someone got them there.

That's part of why I hang out around [Delladreing] -- her rants make me feel less like the only person here who tends to write more than 3 sentences at a time. <wry chuckle> I do still feel awkward that there was any confusion about the intent of those last few comments of mine, though; and I *do* agree that there are some people who seek attention for valid reasons. But if they SI, once again they're people who are hurting because of something in their lives, a lot deeper than the casual contacts they may have with the people around them.
