Digital Art Class

Hey guys! This class aims to explore the various techniques involved in creating digital art. The digital artform arose in the light of the technological developments of OUR era, and is an extremely fun and versatile form, spanning anything from 3D to oil paint, to watercolour simulation. Digital art is unlike the traditional forms in that it can be reproduced again and again without deterioration of quality. Because of the ease with which one can change file sizes etc, digital art is very useful in creating those prints or book covers that you need done, right? :) All this isn't to say that digital media trumps the traditional, but it is a wonderful form that I hope everyone can achieve interesting results with, with a little care and experimentation, maybe :)

Both [liiga] and myself ( [Caelicorn] ) are freelance/commission artists, and we recently made it onto the Epilogue New Masters of Fantasy 2004 list. I am currently putting together a portfolio, and [liiga] is busy doing various commissions and also work for the EMG Portrait Adoption website ( http://adoption.ellenmilliongraphics.com/ ) As a note of importance, we are both our own artists, by which I mean that neither of us is God, nor the All-Knowing-Tome of Knowledge on All Things Artistic. I'd like to think that I can learn something from everyone who comes this way, in fact, I want to, which is why I feel that community involvement of some sort is probably necessary at some level. I will try to find ways to open the forum to you at all times, and hopefully we will come up with some exercises for you, through which you can try some of the techniques that we will suggest here. Above all, it is important to remember to find your own way through all this :) I hope that you find something of use here, and I hope I do too, HAHAHA! ~~[Caelicorn]

Students:
Place your names here if you are interested in becoming a student. I would also appreciate it if beside your name, you wrote something that you would be interested in working on :)
1.[toutlemonde] I'd like to see your methods for shading, and possibly color selection.
2.[LustForLike] What do you think is the best thing I can learn from you? ;)
3.[StiltMan] Color and realism. Sometimes I wonder if it's that I'm doing something wrong or if I'm just not being patient or I just don't know where to go after a certain point.
4. [Perplexity] I would like to acheive greater levels of detail and realism, and learn to make full use of all the tools available to the digital artist.

16. [Elisha Kelly] I know where i want my art to go, but I lack the knowledge to do, I am a beginner so I pretty much need to know everything.

2006-03-31 [Caelicorn]: We will be updating this soon, my preciouses! Sooon!

2006-03-31 [beautiful _ darkness]: yay

2008-08-28 [de Morte]: Anyone have hair tutorials? My worst subject at the moment...

2008-08-28 [windowframe]: There's the Hair Tutorial & Rynn's how-to-draw Hair. I have the same problem, de Morte, I hate hair. >_< If I find any decent tutorials elsewhere, I'll share them with you. :3

2008-08-28 [Mordigen]: I love hair.......not saying I'm the best at it or anything, but it has always been one of my favorite parts of the picture to create, so much fluid motion, it becomes challenging, fun and almost soothing at the same time

2008-08-29 [HardRockAngel]: Anyone have Paint-tutorials? since The professional stuf is way to expensive for me >_<

2008-08-29 [windowframe]: Have you tried Gimp? (http://www.gimp.org/downloads/). Many users here use it as an alternative to photoshop, and it's free.

2008-08-29 [HardRockAngel]: Thanks for the tip ^^  But is it possible to download it on a memo-stick?

2008-08-29 [Thistlewood]: It can be downloaded to a memory stick.

2008-08-30 [de Morte]: Hmmm, that only helps a little, I'm trying to do highlights and lowlights... on the pic in my house, I've seen it done on youtube, but I can't seem to get it right, especially curls!

2008-08-30 [windowframe]: Have you tried dodge & Burn?

2008-08-30 [de Morte]: Yeah, but those aren't very good for a lot of things, and it is really easy to overdo with those...

2008-08-30 [windowframe]: It's easy to overdo it with anything. So you have to know what you're doing with them to get a good effect. And you won't ever know what you're doing with them unless you actually practice with them.

2008-08-30 [de Morte]: I used burn and dodge when I was beginning to use photoshop, but when I got my tablet and started doing more research I learned that those aren't the best things for what I'm trying to do.

2008-08-30 [windowframe]: What exactly are you trying to do?

2008-08-30 [de Morte]: See my picture in my house... and a few other things...

2008-08-30 [windowframe]: Yes, that shows me what you've done - not what you're trying to do.

2008-09-03 [iippo]: Don't believe blindly when everybody on the internet shouts "dodge and burn suck!" Try it out and see if you can achieve what you want with them. Most people think dodge and burn suck because it's so overdone, and it's overdone because they are easy to use and most people try them out in the beginning. But subtle things can be achieved with dodge and burn (for example http://elftown.eu/stuff/558AlphabetArtQ.jpg was done completely by using only dodge and burn)

2008-11-18 [spiritee]: The easiest way to not go overboard with dodge and burn is to decrease the opacity of the brushes, in my experience anyway :) Curves, brightness, and contrast are good to mess with, too, for doing doing highlights and shadows.
